SCS Playground Improvement

As a friend, family or community member of Sutton Central School, we would like to invite you to join us in an effort to re-energize the current SCS playground.

Why the SCS Playground Needs Renewal:

Several pieces of playground equipment were removed, just prior to the start of the ‘17-’18 school year, from the already sparse Sutton Central School playground. SCS was informed that these pieces, which included: swings, seesaws and a tether ball pole, didn’t meet the current safety standards that are required by the school district insurance company. Due to this unforeseen removal of equipment, SCS students and the Sutton community have been left with even fewer play options than they previously enjoyed.

Project Goals:

The district has generously ordered a set of replacement swings and has also allotted the Friends of the Sutton Central School/PTO Playground Committee $11,000 to help replace the lost equipment. As you may be aware, playgrounds cost thousands of dollars and the involved costs add up quickly. These funds will need to cover the purchase cost of new equipment, shipping fees, installation costs and needs to be spent by the end of June, 2018.

With the guidance of the KRSD Facilities Director, the SCS Playground Committee has been researching new play options. The current budget would allow for the purchase of a play structure that is the same size as our current structure. It is felt that this structure is really only utilized by the younger K-2 students and that the allotted funds could be put to better use by purchasing equipment that will benefit all of the kindergarten through fifth grade students at Sutton Central School.

This loss of equipment and fast-approaching deadline has created an urgent desire to raise enough funds to match the $11,000 already  allotted by the district. If successful, these additional funds will allow for the purchase of a larger structure *or* multiple freestanding pieces.

The primary goal of the Sutton Central School playground improvement effort is to develop an outdoor environment that will benefit not only the current and future students that are represented in our school body, but the entire Sutton community as well.

New equipment can accomplish this goal by:

- Encouraging physical activity in a playful environment that includes various types of structure/equipment based play while also maintaining the current areas for children who desire more passive and quiet spaces for play or open areas for activities such as tag, soccer, basketball, etc.

- Being safe: ensuring current standards are met in all provided areas of
play (ie. current equipment & new equipment as well as the open areas of play).

How Can You Help?

In the process of gathering feedback from students, staff and families of the Sutton community, several families (current and future!) have expressed interest in helping to sponsor this playground improvement effort. We would love to extend this opportunity to support the Sutton Central School to any community members and school families who are interested in joining the improvement effort of the playground.

Only through the generosity of SCS families and the Sutton community can this dream be accomplished. We are a tiny school in a tiny town, but we know this community has a big heart!!!

Please consider joining us in supporting this worthy endeavor by submitting an online GoFundMe donation.

If you would like to support the improvement of SCS playground in another way, such as sending a check or by helping to install the new equipment please contact any of the playground committee members below.

Please submit donations by Tuesday, May 1st so that an equipment purchase order may be submitted for approval to the KRSD Facilities Dept. by Friday, May 4th.

On behalf of the students, parents, and staff of Sutton Central School, THANK YOU for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Sutton Central School Playground Committee & the Friends of Sutton Central School/PTO
