Dear Friends,
As you know, our dear friend and brother Scott Thomas passed away earlier this month.
As many of you know, Scott’s children, Drew and Rachel, are both currently enrolled in college and have substantial educational expenses over the next several years. Susan has been a stay-at-home Mom for the past twenty-one years and will be facing a significant financial challenge in Scott’s absence and as she transitions back into the workforce and her life as a single mother. As many of you know, Susan spent much of her time over the last several years supporting Scott during his illness and treatment plan.
I’ve worked with Susan to set up an account/fund which will be 100% directed toward educational expenses for the kids. Both have scholarships to the University of Alabama, but this does not cover the cost of fees, books, living and other ancillary expenses. I spoke with Susan earlier this week and I know she is struggling to adapt to life without Scott, and she does not want the kids to have to go into debt to complete their education. A little financial assistance for the kid’s education would be welcomed by Susan, and I think we all know that Scott would be there for us if we were in a similar situation.
I am volunteering to help set up and manage the account. I am thinking we will keep the fund active for a maximum of five years, or until both kids have both graduated college. Your donations will go directly into the fund and I will oversee the account and disbursements to the family. I’ll also provide an update to everyone who donates on the amount of funds raised and the annual disbursements. If anyone is interested in making a multi-year pledge, I will also be happy to administer that (i.e. a gift that you would renew annually for the next three years, for instance) and provide reminders of your annual pledge.
I am opening the account with a donation from Janet and I this week.
