Scott Brickner/Lee Burke care fund

Lee Burke was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's in 2009.

Her husband, Scott Brickner, has been a friend for nearly 40 years.  And Lee became a friend after she met Scott at Berkeley.  They were both PhD students at Cal.  They fell in love and married in 1983.  Lee went on to teach in the business school at Indiana University, and Scott taught courses in the political science department there.  They moved to Washington, DC a couple of years later, when Lee was hired by the business school at George Washington University.  She was tenured a few years later.  During part of that period, Scott directed UC Berkeley's Washington academic/experiential learning program.

In the mid-2000's, Lee started experiencing cognitive problems that made teaching ever more challenging.  After a series of misdiagnoses, Lee received a definitive  diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease.   She was forced into disability retirement from GWU.   They moved back  to California, renting a home in Pt. Richmond.

Lees medical condition has steadily declined, to where she can no longer speak or control most bodily functions.   Scott is Lee's sole caregiver.  She is at home, requiring 24/7 care.  Scott cannot leave her alone.  He requires surgery himself, but is putting that off because he can't afford to hire a professional competent enough to care for Lee in his absence.  Because of her most basic needs, their living accommodations must be adequate for her care.  Their current living arrangements are sufficient, but annual rent increases have drained their resources.  Scott has little help attending to the most mundane things, such as shopping, picking up prescriptions, etc.  Because Lee requires constant monitoring, care for Lee has become his sole job.

Scott and Lee need our help.
