Scot Johnson was effected mid-life with a rare, and usually fatal, disease known as PML (Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy).  PML is a viral disease characterized by progressive damage or inflammation of the white matter of the brain. It is caused by the JC virus, which is normally present and kept under control by the immune system. JC virus is harmless except in cases of weakened immune systems. In general, PML has a mortality rate of 30–50 percent in the first few months and those who survive can be left with varying degrees of neurological disabilities as was the case for Scot, who lived with the disease for 10+ years.

Most of the groundbreaking research regarding this disease has been done by Dr. Igor Koralnik, the doctor that studied Scot.  As a result of this research,  the PML mortality rate has been greatly reduced.  Still, no cure has been developed. Any donations collected in Scot's name will go directly to research efforts to develop treatments for PML.

Scot passed away on November 10, 2017 after a long struggle with PML and Cirrhosis of the Liver.
