<div>Nach dem Jahrhunderthochwasser in Vietnam der letzten Tage müssen einige Schweizer in der Küstenstadt Nha Trang um ihre Existenz fürchten.

<div>Nach tagelangem Regen war der Cai River mehr als voll und um das Stauwehr zu entlasten, öffneten die Schleusen und Millionen Liter Wasser ergossen sich über die dicht besiedelte Ebene. Dies führte in einigen Gebieten zu den höchsten Wasserständen in den letzten 50 Jahren. Aufgrund der Wassermassen mussten über 100 ́000 Menschen ihre Häuser verlassen. Die historischen Überschwemmungen forderten über 50 Menschenleben, viele werden noch vermisst.

<div><strong>Ganze Stadteile überflutet </strong>

<div>Zu den stark betroffenen Gebieten gehört auch die Küstenstadt Nha Trang, besonders das alte Nha Trang (Nha Trang Xua) Dabei wurden ganze Stadtteile mit bis zu 2.50 Meter hohen Wassermassen überflutet. Menschen mussten auf ihren Hausdächern auf Hilfe warten oder wie der Schweizer Daniel Kauer, mit der Familie mitten in der Nacht zum 19. November zu den Nachbarn schwimmen, während im Erdgeschoss ganze Existenzen zerstört wurden.

<div>Stark unter den Wassermassen litten auch andere Schweizer Bürger in Nha Tang. Die Schweizer Community in der Küstenstadt zeigt in diesen schweren Tagen grosse Solidarität und man hilft sich, wo man kann. Doch das ist bei Weitem nicht genug. Um die zerstörte Infrastrukturen in den Häusern wieder aufbauen zu können, sind einige, die derzeit in Hotels leben müssen, dringend auf finanzielle Unterstützung angewiesen. Ganze Wohnungseinrichtungen inklusive aller Geräte müssen ersetzt werden. Bei Familie Kauer zerstörten die Fluten nicht nur das Wohnhaus bzw. fast alles was darin war, sondern auch deren integrierte Bar. Die Kilo Bar ist nicht nur bei Musikfans sehr beliebt, sondern war auch seit 2017 ein beliebter Ort für hunderte von Live Konzerten. Leider sind auch die Kauers auf Spenden angewiesen.

<div>Nach der Katastrophe dauerte es drei Tage bis das Heim wieder erreichbar war und weitere drei Tage bis überhaupt wieder Strom und Wasser floss und mit dem Aufräumen begonnen werden konnte. Seit Samstag, dem 22. November ist die Familie pausenlos mit etlichen, freiwilligen Helfern daran, die Schlammassen zu entfernen, die gesamte Einrichtung und sämtliche Kleider zu Reinigen und zahllose Gegenstände (Stühle, Betten, Tische, Schränke, nicht reparierbare elektronische Geräte, usw.) zu entsorgen.

<div>Der Schweizer Botschaft und der Swiss Business Assoziation in Vietnam sind die Hände gebunden, eine Fundraising Aktion direkt zu begleiten. Deshalb hat sich die Schweizer Community kurzfristig entschieden einen spontanen Spendenaufruf unter dem Namen «Schweizer in Not Nha Trang» und besonders für die Familie Kauer, die wirklich alles verloren, zu organisieren.

<div>Schweizer in Not Nha Trang ist eine spontan entstandene Gemeinschaft von in Vietnam lebenden Schweizern, die sich zusammengefunden hat, um Landsleute zu unterstützen, die von den Hochwasserereignissen schwer betroffen sind. Wir handeln unbürokratisch, direkt und solidarisch

<div>Die Gruppe klärt derzeit bei den betroffenen Landsleuten die Höhe der entstandenen Schäden und welche Kosten sie nicht selbst tragen können. Auf Basis dieser Einschätzungen wird ein transparenter Verteilschlüssel für die gespendeten Gelder ausgearbeitet.

<div><strong>Zehn Tage danach </strong>
</div>
<div>Noch immer können nicht alle in ihre Häuser zurück und müssen, wenn sie nicht bei Verwandten unterkommen, in Hotels wohnen. Sie arbeiten fast Tag und Nacht, um das Haus, die Wohnung oder den Betrieb wieder einigermassen bewohn- und nutzbar zu machen. Die Zeugen des Hochwassers werden so schnell wohl nicht verschwinden.

<div>After the catastrophic once-in-a-century flooding in Vietnam over the past few days, several Swiss citizens in the coastal city of Nha Trang now fear for their very existence.

<div>Following days of torrential rain, the Cai River overflowed, and in order to relieve pressure on the dam, the spillways were opened. Millions of litres of water poured into the densely populated lowlands. In some areas, water levels reached their highest point in the past 50 years. Due to the sheer volume of water, more than 100,000 people were forced to leave their homes. The historic floods claimed more than 50 lives, and many people are still missing.

<div><strong>Entire neighbourhoods submerged</strong>
</div>
<div>Among the worst affected regions is the coastal city of Nha Trang, particularly the old part of the city (Nha Trang Xua). Entire districts were submerged under up to 2.50 metres (8.2 feet) of water. People had to wait for help on their rooftops. Others, like Swiss national Daniel Kauer and his family, had to swim to their neighbours in the middle of the night on 19.November while the flooding destroyed everything on the ground floor of their house.

<div>Several other Swiss citizens in Nha Trang also suffered greatly from the flooding. Despite the gravity of the situation, the Swiss community in the city has shown remarkable solidarity and is supporting each other wherever possible. Yet this support alone is far from enough. To rebuild the destroyed infrastructure in their homes, some of those who currently have to stay in hotels are urgently dependent on financial assistance. Entire household interiors, including all appliances, must be replaced. In the case of the Kauer family, the floods not only destroyed their living quarters and almost everything inside but also their integrated bar. The “Kilo Bar” had been extremely popular among music enthusiasts and had hosted hundreds of live concerts since 2017. Sadly, the Kauer family is now dependent on donations.

<div>After the catastrophe, it took three days until the family could even reach their home again, and another three days until electricity and water were restored and the cleanup could begin. Since Saturday, 22.November, the family has been working tirelessly—together with numerous volunteers—to remove the masses of mud, clean all furnishings and clothing, and dispose of countless irreparable items (chairs, beds, tables, cabinets, electronic devices, etc.).

<div><strong>Swiss in Nha Trang facing emergency</strong>
</div>
<div>The Swiss Embassy and the Swiss Business Association in Vietnam are unable to directly support a fundraising campaign. For this reason, the Swiss community has spontaneously decided to organize an emergency appeal under the name “Swiss in Need Nha Trang”, with particular emphasis on supporting the Kauer family, who truly lost everything.

</div>
<div>Swiss in Need Nha Trang is a spontaneous initiative formed by Swiss citizens living in Vietnam who have joined forces to support fellow nationals severely affected by the flooding. The group acts efficiently, directly and in solidarity. It is currently assessing the extent of the damage suffered by the affected individuals and determining which costs they cannot cover themselves. Based on these assessments, a transparent allocation plan for the donated funds will be drawn up.

<div><strong>Ten days later</strong>
</div>
<div>Many people still cannot return to their homes and must stay in hotels unless they can stay with relatives. They are working almost day and night to make their houses, apartments or businesses at least partially habitable and functional again. The traces of the flooding will likely remain visible for a long time to come.
