<div>Stel je voor: je bent op school, het is pauze en je moet naar de wc. Niets bijzonders—je loopt erheen, doet wat je moet doen en gaat weer verder. Voor ons is dat de normaalste zaak van de wereld. Maar voor miljoenen schoolkinderen is dat helemaal niet zo vanzelfsprekend.

<div>In veel landen, zoals Oeganda—het land waar onze dorpsgenoot Steven geboren is—zijn er op scholen vaak veel te weinig toiletten. Denk aan scholen met 200 tot 300 leerlingen die samen maar twee of drie wc’s moeten delen. Van goede sanitaire voorzieningen voor meisjes is vaak al helemaal geen sprake.

<div>Voor dorpsgenoot Steven Kibira, die oorspronkelijk uit Oeganda komt, was dat onacceptabel. Hij besloot in actie te komen en richtte Stichting Tugende Africa op. Tugende betekent: “Laten we in beweging komen. Let go!”

<div>Met deze stichting bouwen we op scholen die dit zelf niet kunnen bekostigen, sanitaire units zodat kinderen op een hygiënische en veilige manier naar het toilet kunnen. De units zijn ecologisch gebouwd en vormen geen belasting voor het milieu. Voor meisjes is er speciale aandacht voor privacy en voorzieningen tijdens hun maandelijkse periode.

<div>Het gebied waarin wij werken is afgelegen, in het westen van Oeganda. We hebben ondertussen drie scholen kunnen helpen met nieuwe sanitaire voorzieningen. Echter zijn er nog veel meer scholen die onze hulp kunnen gebruiken! Zoals je begrijpt, kost dat geld.

<div>Daarom zijn wij ongelooflijk blij dat de Kidsrun van Thuizbij dit jaar haar opbrengst doneert aan Tugende Africa. De kinderen uit Nederhorst den Berg helpen zo rechtstreeks de kinderen in omgeving Kimya!
