Angie McBride and Jessica Burbridge are professional school counselors at Harrisburg R-VIII School district in Harrisburg, Missouri. Angie works with high school students and Jessica works in the elementary and middle schools.
We will each be getting a standard poodle puppy, and we will be using them as therapy dogs in our school buildings. We have chosen standard poodles because they are hypo-allergenic, intelligent, sensitive, and peaceful dogs. The breeder of these poodles has provided therapy dogs to another high school in Missouri and they come highly recommended. The dogs will live with us and our families. The responsibilities of owning the dogs including providing for their health and care will belong to us and not the school district.
There are many benefits to having therapy dogs at school. Here are just a few examples: therapy dogs have calming effects and can help reduce stress and lift moods. They can help children feel more at ease and open to social situations. Dogs can help teach children about kindness and gentleness. They can also help children cope with tragedy. We were able to witness all of these things first hand when a school counselor from a neighboring school district brought her therapy dog in to help after our school experienced a tragedy. We believe having therapy dogs in our school will provide us with a greater opportunity to help students.
The cost for each puppy and their training and certification is $2000. We would greatly appreciate your donation to help us purchase and train these dogs to benefit our students.
