School supplies for Ashinaga Uganda children
Help us provide school supplies for the 100 students of Ashinaga Uganda's elementary school, Terakoya, in Nansana, Uganda !

Who are we helping?
Ashinaga Uganda Rainbow House supports 991 registered orphans in the Nansana area in Uganda, who benefit from Ashinaga's holistic care program that includes home visits, psychosocial support, outings and camping, scholarships, and the provision of school materials.
The Terakoya literacy education program began in 2007 with 13 children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. It is based on the terakoya (“temple school”) system of private education that existed in Japan during the Edo Period (1603–1868). Although the government of Uganda provides free education via the Universal Primary Education scheme, orphans of Ashinaga Uganda are generally unable to study at regular schools, because they cannot afford to pay for even the most basic items needed, such as uniforms, lunch, and school materials. Terakoya follows the curriculum of Ugandan government schools, and after children complete the program, they are able to study at regular schools on Terakoya scholarships. There are currently 100 children enrolled in this program.
Ashinaga Uganda is currently trying to raise funds to cover all 989 children's school materials that they will need for the upcoming school year beginning in September 2020.
What do they need?
COVID-19 placed a majority of the 989 children and their families in precarious financial situations. To support them during this difficult time, Ashinaga Uganda rolled out an emergency assistance program. As the virus made it impossible to provide material goods to families, Ashinaga Uganda decided to distribute financial aid to families in Nansana, Uganda. Although this support was necessary during this crisis period, this leaves Ashinaga Uganda in need of additional funding to provide school materials for the upcoming school year.
How will the funds be used?
We have decided to partner with Ashinaga Uganda to fundraise for the 100 children attending the Ashinaga Terakoya literacy program. The school materials provided are generally, but not exclusive to, pencils, pens, erasers, notebooks, paper, and school books. Any additional funds raised will go towards the 889 other children's school material needs in the Nansana area.
School materials cost about 36,000 Ugandan shillings per student, per trimester.

36,000 UGX x 100 Terakoya children x 3 terms = 10,800,000 UGX

Who are we?
Ashinaga has multiple organisations around the world, in Japan, Brazil, the US, the UK, France, Senegal, and Uganda. The staff is comprised of a a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds, all connected by the Ashinaga's mission to provide access to education to all.
This fundraiser is hosted by Ashinaga France to support Ashinaga Uganda during this particular difficult time during COVID-19.
We are also working in solidarity to celebrate Ashinaga Japan's 50th anniversary of street fundraising, which is normally done in public twice a year across Japan, but was moved to virtual only this year due to COVID-19, and is called the "Ashinaga Global 100 Challenge". Ashinaga France
The Ashinaga Africa Initiative (AAI) is Ashinaga’s flagship project in Sub-Saharan Africa. Its mission is to contribute to the region’s development by providing orphaned students with the education, network, and opportunities necessary to become leaders in their home countries. We invest in students who want to study internationally and then return home to make a positive difference in their country and community.
Our leadership program includes the financing of an undergraduate education abroad, support for completing school applications, mentoring, and career guidance.
In 2016, Ashinaga established a non-profit organization (association à but non-lucratif) in Paris to support the Ashinaga Africa Initiative across the continent. Ashinaga France supports our students studying at European universities, maintaining relations with partner universities, and working with members of the Kenjin-Tatsujin International Advisory Council and external partners to develop the Ashinaga Africa Initiative. Ashinaga France currently has 4 staff members who work to support 34 students enrolled in higher education in France, Lithuania, Czech Republic, and the Netherlands.
