After every Thanksgiving, there are the shopping days...Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. And then, I don’t remember when this happened, came Giving Tuesday, a day where we are encouraged to donate to your favorite charities. On Giving Tuesday of 2018, I saw a picture floating around Facebook that really resonated with me. It said, “Wanna give back? Call your local schools and ask to pay off overdue lunch accounts for kids. Kids have bigger worries than whether or not they’re able to eat or not that day.” After sharing it, another concerned friend and I decided we were going to do something about it. We were going to help, which has brought us here today...a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds and awareness to the plight of so many kids that go hungry day in and day out.
A recent article on WRAL stated that as many as 130,000 people in Wake County may not know where their next meal will come from, and hunger hinders a student’s ability to focus and succeed in school. When a kid walks into their school their only concerns should be about whether or not they did their homework or the test/quiz they have in 4th period, not the hunger pains they feel and the breakfast or lunch they cannot afford.
Some schools around Wake County have an “Angel Fund”, which helps students in need pay for breakfast and/or lunch. Other schools depend on their PTA. There’s no uniform approach to resolving this issue and differers from school to school. Our fundraising goal is $500. $250 will go to Wendell Elementary School and $250 will go to Cary High School. When/If we surpass this goal, we will give the excess to other schools in the county. But at the end of the day, if we can help one school help one child, we’ve succeeded.
In Wake County there are 3 categories in which students will fall for the Breakfast and Lunch programs: Free, Reduced and Full price.
Breakfast costs: Free, Reduced $0.30, Full $1.25 (K-5), $1.50(6-12)
Lunch costs: Free, Reduced $0.40, Full $2.55 (K-5), $2.80 (6-12)
Your contribution will assist any student who may not be able to pay for their lunch on a particular day. Imagine the stress or panic of a student who forgot their lunch money or didn’t have enough to pay for lunch. Your gift can take away that worry for a student! Although no child will go hungry during school, those students who cannot pay for their lunch are given just a fruit and vegetable tray (no entree). No One should suffer from food insecurity.
