When I taught in Rwanda as a Peace Corps volunteer, a very special group of my students worked incredibly hard to learn as much as possible in a challenging environment where this was not the priority for the majority of students. They attended my English club for all two years of my service, every single week, for no purpose other than to learn; they walked to school at 6:00 in the morning to study together before classes started.

These 6 students scored extremely well on their upper secondary school (high school) entrance exams, but none of them can afford to attend the excellent schools to which they’ve been accepted. I believe these students have exceptional potential, and deserve the opportunity to learn and grow in a stimulating place with adequate resources (computers, libraries, textbooks, etc). The local school they’ll have to continue attending otherwise has far less to offer them, and I think they will be severely limited by it. This is the school where I taught, and as fond as I am and always will be of my village’s school, it is not the best place for bright, ambitious students to thrive.

I’m writing to ask that you consider contributing to these students’ education. As a teacher in Rwanda, I witnessed firsthand how empowering it is for these kids to gain a solid education. Without a good secondary school education, it will be much more difficult for them to perform well on university admission exams, gain admission to university, and eventually find good jobs. Additionally, they will not have access to any math, science, or ICT courses, so those aiming to attend medical school, pursue computer programming, or become mathematics teachers will automatically be barred from these valuable opportunities altogether.

In total, six of my students need financial assistance: Tresor, Benjamin, Yvonne, Aline, Elisabeth, and Alphonse. They are bright, witty and kind kids with enormous potential. They received their admission letters (including tuition costs etc) on December 30th but they’re supposed to start school January 6th, so we have very little time to get their school fees together.

I hope you’ll consider making a donation, or even sponsoring an individual student. No amount is too small, and what counts for little here goes a very long way in Rwanda. These students are very dear to my heart, and it would mean the world to me to support their academic growth and help them pursue careers in which I know they can excel.

Thank you so much in advance,

Lia
