Scholarships for Afghan Girls

Greetings and Blessings!

We are three sisters Momena Billah, Manija Billah, and Hooria Billah or “The Three Musketeers” who immigrated to the US from Afghanistan when we were kids. We immigrated due to the lack of opportunity in Afghanistan as a result of the uprising of the Taliban and the war that ensued. This afforded us the opportunity to complete our education and all three of us graduated from colleges in Chicago (shout out to Chi-town)! Two of us currently live and work in Afghanistan in hopes of making a difference.

There is a huge disparity between boys and girls in regards to access to education in Afghanistan. We know this because we work in the education and development sector in Afghanistan. We see over 50% of students at educational institutions to be male. There are traditional, security, social, and economic considerations that make it much more difficult for young girls to pursue and complete their education. Young girls often come to us asking us for scholarships to assist them through their education.

Take the example of Sara who is 14 years old. She has two sisters and one brother. Her mother is a tailor earning $50 a month and her father is a teacher earning $100 a month. Sara is ranked number 3 among 30 students in her class. She goes to a public school which naturally means no computer lab or an English program. Her all-girls school is often under threat of attack by Taliban. Sara hopes to be a doctor someday. Her family struggles to make ends meet. Sara had started an English program, but she dropped out after three months due to financial hardships. Sara tries to save every bit of money she can in hopes of someday completing an English program. Sara is determined to become a doctor no matter what. Would you like to help Sara and girls like her achieve their dreams?

There’s a huge gap between girls’ and boys’ education, which is why we are asking you to fill the gap through your generous donations. We have thus partnered with Momin Academy in Afghanistan to raise funds for 100 girls to pursue English and computer education.

**For just $50, you will enable a young girl to gain computer skills through a 6-month course.

**For just $150, you will enable a young girl to gain English skills through a yearlong course.

Goal: $10,000

Sincerely,

The Three Musketeers

***This fund is run by me (Hooria Billah) and I currently reside in Chicago, Illinois. I am working as a volunteer in unison with Momin Academy in order to help girls pave their way for their future by taking supplemental courses in computer and English skills. The funds will be used directly for girls who are eligible for the scholarship through academic merit. The withdrawal plan is to send the money through Western Union to Afghanistan in order for the girls to be admitted into the institution.***
