We are reaching out as a group of socialists of color to raise funds for ourselves and other people of color (POC) who want to attend this year’s Socialism 2019 Conference in Chicago. We want to center the liberation of POC in today’s socialist movement. As part of that, making possible the contributions of POC radicals and activists at this conference is important to us.
This year’s Socialism Conference is being sponsored and organized by multiple left organizations, including Haymarket Books, Jacobin, and the Democratic Socialists of America. POC comrades across different organizations have already begun shaping an anti-racist conversation at the Conference. For example, the Decolnize Socialism track, being organized by POC comrades, aims to uplift the leadership of black, brown, indigenous POC in our movements and to develop a more relevant and socialist analysis of fighting racism. Folks will present on the role of colonialism and slavery in establishing capitalism, the migrant rights struggle in the US, anti-imperialist movements in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, the conflicts between forces on the Right and Left, native and First Nations struggles on every continent, reparations for black people in the U.S., women of color, and so much more. In addition, POC are organizing various meetups for other POC folks.
If you have donations to spare, please contribute whatever you can to this GoFundMe so that POC who cannot afford the whole trip, but wish to attend, can receive a scholarship/financial aid that will help defray those costs.Funds will be disbursed based on need and will be applied to travel/lodging.
Funds will be allocated to:
Travel expenses: $150-$250 per person roundtrip flights
Housing: $75 per person for 3 nights in hotel or hostel
Conference Registration: $50 to $75 discounted price per person
Food & Safety: Rest will go to a fund to be split equally for food and other resources (i.e. cabs, pharmacy needs, etc.) per person
