Scholarship for BIPOC Ancestral Healing Trainees

Donation protected
***Update (April 1, 2020). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the first retreat for the ancestral healing trainees was held in late March in an online in a distance format with 33 participants from eight countries. It was a great success! This format may be necessary in October for the second retreat as well (we’ll decide in July or early August). All scholarship funds previously dedicated to the costs of food and lodging in March will be directed to support October food, lodging and travel costs for the same BIPOC trainees. If donations exceed the need or if the October retreat is held in an online format due to the pandemic, Ancestral Medicine will distribute all scholarship funds equally to those specific practitioners to help them to get established in their practice with ancestral healing arts. In short those folks will still get all the money one way or another and we’re grateful for your support!***

This fundraiser will run Nov 2019 - Oct 2020 and 100% of funds will support BIPOC trainees in the 2020 Ancestral Healing Practitioner Training. This is a vocational training in ritual and cultural healing arts that will support trainees to serve their respective communities and beyond. We understand that ancestry is not the only factor in systemic disadvantage; however, as this aspect of our work is explicitly focused on ancestral healing, we wish to proactively support Black, Indigenous, and People of Color participants who express interest in this offer of assistance. For context 2020 BIPOC trainees are African, Asian, Latino, and First Nations/Native American, Black South African, Aboriginal Australian, and Singaporean.

How Will the Money be Used? All contributions will be dedicated to costs of food and lodging for our two in-person retreats. Combined food and lodging costs for each week retreat are approximately $600 per person/per retreat. These are fixed costs beyond Ancestral Medicine's ability to control and they are completely separate from tuition/training arrangements between Ancestral Medicine and trainees. For context, tuition arrangements may include further reductions/scholarships.

If scholarship proceeds exceed the $19,000 USD we estimate will cover food and lodging at both retreats for all BIPOC trainees, we will further disperse funds to the same participants in the form of travel reimbursements as some will travel twice from Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Canada, and different parts of the U.S.

We know some donors may wish to direct their support to specific groups (e.g., Australians of settler ancestries who want to support Aboriginal Australian trainees). We invite those donating as a gesture of repair for ancestral harms to consider allowing their contribution to assist the larger group of diverse applicants. If, however, you are clear that you wish to direct support to a specific group or trainee, please contact us directly. Unless otherwise designated, scholarship funds will be dispersed equally among all qualified applicants who wish to receive this support.

About Us. Ancestral Medicine is not a non-profit and as such we’re not able to offer a tax deduction for donations. We do however commit with the ancestors and Earth as witness that 100% of donations (aside from the small percentage that GoFundMe keeps) will directly support BIPOC trainees with food, lodging, and travel costs in a way that involves no financial profit for Ancestral Medicine. We decided to use the GoFundMe platform for this fundraiser as we hope it will reach more people and in turn bring in more support for trainees. GoFundMe allows donors to remain anonymous or to be known.

We are committed to keeping all Ancestral Medicine offerings accessible to people of diverse backgrounds and means. We invite individuals and organizations to contribute to our scholarship fund at whatever level is possible. Even very modest contributions are great! We also invite those who previously enjoyed financial assistance for online courses or in-person events to consider paying it forward with a donation.
