Scattering CJ Silhouette Project

Every day, 132 people in the United States die by suicide, 22 of them are active duty military or veterans. That is one suicide every 12 minutes, and 48,334 every year. With numbers like these, it is so hard to understand why more awareness and resources aren’t deployed to address this mental health crisis.

The silhouette installation is part of a global suicide prevention campaign centered around Scattering CJ , a new, award-winning documentary, exploring the devastating effects of suicide, the extraordinary generosity of strangers, and one troubled family's attempt to finally find peace.

The money raised from this fundraiser will go directly to producing, transporting, and installing 132 life size silhouettes of soldiers, teens and adults (representing the number of suicides in the U.S. each day) and to support screenings in other cities. Inspired by the work of Linda Lajoie, founder of the Maine Silhouette Project, this powerful exhibit is slated to go on display during the week of June 22, 2020, in coordination with the screening of the documentary Scattering CJ  at the US Capitol Visitor Center.

Select members of Congress, mental health professionals, gun safety advocates and loss survivors will be invited to speak at the opening of the exhibit. After exhibition on the Capitol Grounds, the silhouettes will be available to display across the country to promote greater understanding of the scale and incidence of suicide and to raise awareness to prevent more tragic loss of life.

In addition, 12 sculptural chairs will be interspersed amongst the silhouettes, symbolizing the emptiness wrought nearly every 12 minutes in the wake of suicide and creating a contemplative space for individual and collective reflection.

Everyone knows someone or knows of someone who suffers from depression, anxiety, PTSD, or some other mental illness, whether they are open about it or not. It is extremely important that we support people going through these issues, because the pain of loss from suicide is the worst feeling a mother, father, brother, sister, friend or peer can ever feel.

Thank you for supporting this project of awareness, hope and love.
