Hi, my name is Georgia and I’m Scarlets mom. Scarlet is 8 years old and she’s faced many medical challenges. Last March, Scarlet had surgery on her spinal cord. We are technically still recovering from that surgery as Scarlet goes to aquatic therapy twice a week and continues to follow up with Neurology and Neurosurgery. In May, I noticed that Scarlet was having trouble hearing me from across the room. She was listening to the tv and her iPad at a louder volume than usual, and her face and neck seemed swollen to me. After many appointments, the doctor ordered a full brain MRI. We got the results back, and Scarlet has a large mass on her brain. It is pressing against the nerves attached to her ears and eyes, and does present itself as dangerous. The problem is, this is very rare. Which means there aren’t many surgeons that perform this surgery. And there are even less pediatric surgeons that have performed it. It’s terrifying. Scarlet needs a pediatric neurotologist, otologist and neurosurgeon that can confidently perform the surgery TOGETHER. We are communicating with Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and Boston Children’s Hospital.
