Help me help my mother

Dear Friends,
My family and I are raising money for my mother Michele who was diagnosed with dementia with Lewy Bodies, earlier this year. As in many families, my mother is the rock who holds the family together with her particular mixture of true kindness, loyal relationships and very hard work. Earlier this past summer she got up as usual to go to work only to collapse and fall on the floor unconscious. My dad rushed her to the hospital and they could do nothing for her and sent her to a bigger research hospital. She had every test imaginable, CAT scans and MRIs, 4 spinal taps, blood work and even surgery but no one knew what had happened to her or why? As the mystery deepened, my mother would emerge into a state of semi consciousness. It was like talking to a person who was dreaming. My brother and I were devastated. Our dear mama struggled to connect to present day reality. This began a long, downward spiral with medications, more tests, to find a cause for her illness. All the while she has suffered from physical and mental decline. After many possible diagnoses, her doctors have diagnosed her with early stages of Lewy Bodies Dementia (LBD).
LBD is a form of dementia like no other. It does not come on slowly over many years. This terrible disease strikes suddenly out of the blue and robs a human being of control of their minds. Mama’s stay at the hospital ran a total of 48 days and at a nursing/rehab center for 26 days. All of this has left our family with an back breaking bill. Michele is back home but the medical bills continue to accumulate and she needs care for her condition and physical therapy. We are urgently calling on your compassion and generosity to help us with her medical expenses so that she can continue to be cared for. Donations of any size will go towards paying her medical expenses.
Our situation is truly dire and we are forced to sell our family home as we have few other resources to pay bills and to keep the family afloat. We have tremendous faith in the kindness of humanity and believe in the goodness of strangers to lend a hand. As a culture, we are certainly going through tough times but we believe deeply in the power of community and thank you in advance for remembering the threads that binds us all and helping however you can. **Michele was a clothing designer and stylist before the illness took her over. She and our father were selling her styles to boutiques all over the USA. As a thank you for your donation, my parents will donate a warm winter coat for every $100 raised in this appeal. The coats will be donated to either NY Cares , One Warm Coat or Women in Need .
