The Santa Barbara Bloom Project’s mission is to provide individuals of all ages with a fun, educational, and hands-on approach to combating erosion and beautifying our communities. We accomplish this through distribution of native wildflower seeds and volunteer-driven planting of native flora.
The destruction of the fire provides a fresh start for native flora and is even required for the germination of many species. We aim to facilitate the recovery of native species, reducing invasive competitors and providing both food and habitat for animals and insects, drought-resistant erosion control, and a beautiful splash of color for all of those who enjoy our natural areas.
Donations you provide go towards the purchase of bulk native wildflower seeds and seeding supplies. Interested corporate sponsors may contact us directly via email.
We have already hosted one event at which we distributed hundreds of native wildflowers seed packets and seed bombs that to the donations we have already receieved. We will be hosting additional seeding events throughout the winter.
Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate in seeding events as well as events to prepare seed bombs and seed packets. Please follow our Facebook page or Instagram page for event updates, and invite your friends.
We have a diversity of native species in our seed mixes including Calystegia macrostegia (Island Morning Glory), Encelia californica (Bush Sunflower), Pseudognaphalium californicum (California Everlasting), Acmispon, glaber (Deerweed) , Mimulus aurantiacus (Sticky Monkey Flower), Paeonia californica (California Peony), Layia platyglossa (Tidy Tips), Phacelia distans (Wild Heliotrope), Salvia mellifera (Black Sage), Salvia apiana (White Sage), California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica), Collinsia heterophylla (Purple Chinese Houses), Achillea millefolium (Common Yarrow), Eriophyllum confertiflorum (Yellow Yarrow), Adenostoma fasciculatum (Chamise), Lupinus nanus (Sky Lupine), Corethrogyne filaginifolia (California Aster), Eriogonum fasciculatum (California Buckwheat), Artemisia californica (California Sagebrush), Salvia leucophylla (Purple Sage), Malacothamnus fasciculatus (Chaparral Mallow) and Hazardia squarrosa (Sawtooth Goldenbush), Castilleja affinis (Indian Paintbrush).
While its organizers were inspired by the Thomas Fire, it is our hope and expectation that the Santa Barbara Bloom Project will continue year after year, adding wildflowers and native plants to the communities around Santa Barbara, Montecito and Carpinteria and providing a forum for education and community outdoor involvement.
