Sawyer's Journey

On October 24th, 2012,my sister Karrie and her family's lives were changed as they were blessed with their second child, a beautiful boy, Sawyer. Sawyer is a big boy just starting primary, a boy full of life, and loves making others laugh. He is a joy to his sister, Lily who adores him.

At 1 year old, Sawyer experienced his first recognizable generalized seizure which left him with Todds Paralysis from the neck down, thank heaven only temporary. Since that day he has been diagnosed with Epilepsy as a result of a cortical dysplasia on the right central portion of his brain. This has resulted in many tests, medication trials with many side effects, however the type of epilepsy Sawyer has often become resistant to medications and they simply stop working. IWK has an amazing neurology team and recognize that as medication options run out for Sawyer, his next step is a consultation and testing with Toronto Sick Kids for possible candidacy for epilepsy surgery to have the cortical dysplasia removed from his brain. The experts have shared that a surgery such as this is best done under the age of 7 if he is a candidate so that if he loses any function on the right side of his brain, the left sides plasticity will increase success of rehabilitation.

With traveling back and forth to Toronto Sick Kids comes medical expenses, travel and accommodation expenses and currently testing expenses that MSI does not cover but as a family we want to ensure Sawyer has the best possible health care team assessing and working with him along his journey.

These are expenses that don't need to be an added stressor for my sister and her family as they figure out what comes next for their strong warrior.

There are so many giving hearts out there and anyone who knows Karrie and her family knows that she gives each day to anyone in need and always has. It is difficult for this family to turn the lens on themselves as they are very private about the challenges they've faced over the past 5 years.

Please help me in our fundraising efforts to show this family the love, humility and loving generosity ‎that they have shown others and I know is in our community by donating to Sawyer's journey.
