Sawyer Basketball Scholarship

Hello! My name is Rachel Sawyer-Walker and I am a Norwalk CT native. I played in the Girls Basketball Association (GBA) league from the second grade through high school. One of my goals is to give back to communities within Norwalk that shaped me in a positive way. Growing up, basketball was a big part of my life by providing me with a great community of teammates, coaches and mentors who are my family to this day.

I am excited to announce that I personally will be providing 10 GBA scholarships to waive the players registration fees who identify as low-income and/or need-based. I am also creating this GoFundMe (https://gofund.me/74ffba4d) because I know what basketball means to the Norwalk community and I would love to waive additional fees for players who are looking to play basketball but may not have access.

Many of us in the basketball community have been shaped by the GBA league and the Ben Franklin gym and I would love to help continue that for current GBA Travel players. In addition, I want to pay homage to those who we have lost in the basketball community throughout the years. 

The requirements for this scholarship are as follows, this is in collaboration with Jeff Iannazzo (as many of us know him as Mr. I!) :

1. Identify as low-income and/or need-based.
2. Must be a resident of Norwalk, CT
3. Submit a paragraph (minimum 4-6 sentences) essay/video/presentation etc. (if you need accommodations please email Rachel Sawyer at [email redacted] or call/text [phone redacted]) answering one of the following questions:

What does basketball mean to you?
What does travel basketball mean to you?
Who is your favorite basketball player and why?

Scholarships close on December 4, 2021.
