Saving Grace

Grace has always been a fighterWhen she was still in the wild, this precious little mustang filly sustained a fracture to her hind leg and a kick to her mouth, yet miraculously survived. Two years ago, in an effort to help her continued survival, I was approved to adopt her directly from the Ochoco National Forest in Oregon.  Grace left her home in the forest and successfully entered the human world for gentling, veterinary intervention and a nurtured future.

For the past 10 months, Grace has suffered a new big challenge; a complex sinus condition that often makes it difficult for her to breathe. After two scopes, x-rays, courses of antihistamines, antibiotics, steroids and herbal remedies with no resolution, we headed to Washington State University Veterinary Hospital so that Grace could have a full work-up and a CT Scan. She had never been on such a long trailer ride, visited such large hospital, or been attended to by strangers. But Grace just blew me away. I watched in utter amazement as she charmed all of the staff... she even stood quietly without sedation while a student learned how to insert a catheter into her neck! Grace seemed to understand that everyone was trying to help her.

We learned that Grace had a perfect body score,  excellent overall blood work despite the underlying infection and optimal organ function. The CT scan revealed what "appear" to be hardened masses of pus in her sinus cavities that require surgeries to remove. Although the surgeries are no small task, the outlook is very optimistic and truly the only way to save Grace.

Although it all seems like a lot for one little ragamuffin mustang filly to endure, Grace is so full of life, energy and determination. She wants to live, to breathe easy again. How can I do less than everything possible for her? Her spunky determination, sweet spirit and willingness to endure various diagnostic procedures have gained her the dedication of our incredible veterinarian here at home and he is committed to doing everything he can for Grace.

We can do it; we just need people to come alongside us and help us with the financial cost – to be part of our “saving Grace.”
