Saving Vega

If you haven't already, I'd like you to meet Vega. My best friend, partner in crime and the shining star of my world. Born December 23rd, just 2 days before my favourite holiday, she has been a cherished member of our family for almost 8 wonderful years.

On September 18th my little girl wasn't feeling well and was rushed to the emergency vet. She had been throwing up and become listless. Though they didn't find anything overtly concerning and she was cleared to come home after bouncing back to her old self, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was still very wrong. She seemed off, had a spotty appetite and her stools progressively got darker and softer. We brought her to our local vet the week following her emergency trip and so began a series of several visits, tests, special food, hospitalization/IV fluids and medications. Less than a month later, we are at over $3000 in fees and have yet to even get a diagnosis. Tomorrow on Thanksgiving day, she will be going in for a consult with a specialist and to receive an ultrasound which will hopefully give us some answers, but this will run us at least another $800 if not more and does not include the subsequent treatment or further testing.

So far, all that has been ruled out is Addison's disease.

It goes without saying that we cherish our pets, but I believe Vega is truly special. You would be hard pressed to find a dog with more pep and personality who is also the sweetest, most personable companion. She has an innate ability to win the hearts of everyone she meets, and actively makes children and adults alike smile when we walk by. Even the vets have all told me how much they adore her. She loves all whom give her so much as an ounce of attention and the feeling is mutual.

2 years ago I went through three difficult losses in rapid succession that pushed me to my lowest point, and her companionship is what kept me going. Even today, I feel my survival through grief and mental illness is only thanks to her effervescent presence. We have been through so much together, good and bad. The hardest part of this entire ordeal has been watching her become less and less like herself each day.

We are not a wealthy household and have had to put the majority of these costs on credit so far, but we would do anything and pay any price to ensure Vega gets to live out a long, happy life with us. Any amount would help us to begin paying off these fees right away, and open up more credit towards testing and treatment. I will of course keep this updated with any news we receive after her appointment tomorrow.

Please keep Vega, and us, in your thoughts.
