Saving our local community newspapers

It’s another small-town graduation day. Seniors are dressed in their caps and gowns, the valedictorian and salutatorian are getting ready to give their big speech, and a student who struggled for 13 years of school is about to cross the stage.

With all this going on there’s something missing though. There’s no one there taking photos for the local newspaper. There’s no one there photographing and documenting the biggest day of many kids lives.
But why though? Because the local newspaper that the town knew for over a hundred years no longer exists.
What is it that we do for our communities? The real question is what don’t we do?
We cover the local city council, school board and county commissioners’ meetings. We are there with cameras to capture smiling faces at graduations, and on the first day of school. We publish photos of the star quarterback, and highlight students’ successes, when no other outlet will. We are at the school plays, and let the community know about different specials at the local grocery store through inserts. We highlight a community members’ trip overseas when they do mission work, and let the readers know about different crime happenings so the community can stay safe. And that’s just to name a few things.
All those things mentioned are things that help keep the local community informed. We help keep relatives and former community members connected, and we boost confidence in kids and adults when they see their successes being recognized.
In a time when most newspapers, no matter the size, are struggling with the reality of a community, one day not having a newspaper, they can call their own. It is real, very real!
We have already witnessed two local community newspapers just a few months ago that closed their doors. One of those newspapers where right in our own county.
We are fighting to stay alive because we are committed to the communities we serve. We believe in what we are doing and the impact of what we are doing is for the people of these communities.

Businesses can begin and continue to advertise in their local community newspapers. Community members can subscribe to the newspapers, run classifieds, garage sales, wedding, anniversaries and birthday announcements. Community members can encourage their friends and family to read the newspapers and employees can encourage their bosses to buy an ad whether it’s for the local honor roll or for any kind of advertisement as well as subscriptions for their employees.
Everyone plays a critical role in keeping the local newspaper operating. In today’s world, it is costly to keep the newspapers alive. The cost of printing and postage only has gone up. Everyday expenses keep increasing faster than ever. Newspapers are being forced to reduce staff members while the remaining staff members increase their workload just to ensure that the community is being covered for stories.
It takes all of us working together to put out a newspaper for the entire county and elsewhere to enjoy.
Our goal through our GoFundMe campaign is to bring awareness to people that local newspapers like ours, is an important product to the life of the local community and that newspapers are keepsakes and are our history for generations to come.
We plan on using all funds to continue to produce an awarding winning newspapers so that we can continue to have stories written about what goes on in our small communities.
If it isn’t for newspapers, especially a local small community newspaper, we would not have the true local news that matters more on our Mainstreet than in Washington. We have the ability to make a difference before our community is without a newspaper.
