Our doctor said, "If you have to get cancer, thyroid cancer is the one you want." Who would have thought we would have to "get" cancer? On February 9, 2018 my husband, Christopher Gomez, was diagnosed with stage 3 thyroid papillary carcinoma. Although it is considered the most "curable" cancer, the fear and anxiety of the "c" word caused us to become paralyzed in a sea of uncertainty; especially since the tumor continues to grow rapidly. What makes it even more frightening, this cancer affects 1.2 % of men and women world wide - from that only 25% of them are men (American Cancer Society, 2018). He will need to undergo a complete thyroidectomy on February 28, 2018. After surgery, he will be in the hospital a minimum of three days with a drainage tube in his neck (this helps keep any liquids from reaching his lungs). Unfortunately, we will not know if the cancer has spread until surgery.

We are very blessed with excellent insurance, which will cover the majority of the costs. We will only be responsible for $3000 of the total cost. However, because Chris does not qualify for compensated disability, they will be docking his pay for everyday that he is out post-surgery. This is a total of 7 business days (praying it is not more) at a rate of $208 per day, $1456.

Chris is an amazing father to a 4 year old little boy, Luke, two dogs, Autumn and Winter, and two cats, Kitty Purry and Skylar. He is an inspiring math teacher, football coach, and track coach. Although family and work keep him busy, he still manages to find time to volunteer and attend many church events. He is my husband, best friend, my everything.
