I am not a doctor, a nurse, a carpenter, or a welder. But I am a project manager and I know how to get stuff done. We have been actively planning a response to the disaster in St Thomas and St John for the last 24 hours. Our friends need help.
We're calling it Operation Save the Painkillers.
The US Government has already mobilized 700 marines and 3 ships to the islands to participate in the immediate life saving efforts. Several other home-grown support groups are collecting donations of immediate need items (toiletries, food, diapers, etc....). All this is very important in the next 3 weeks as basic infrastructure is restored.
We are taking a slightly different tact. As a former resident I appreciate the challenges of getting basic building materials and tools on the island. On a normal day, there is only a 50/50 chance that the Home Depot will have what you need--but there's a 100 percent chance that it will be expensive.
Because supplies are so expensive, rebuilding efforts take longer and the entire economy of the island suffers as people cannot go back to work and visitors (and their much-needed revenue) go elsewhere.
Our relief effort plan is as follows:
Establish a Go Fund Me donation site to collect funds for the purchase of building materials and long term staples.
Raise enough money to fill a shipping container with the items people will need to rebuild: hand tools, nails, wood, caulking, concrete, sheet metal, batteries, drills, saws, and generators.
Coordinate delivery of the container(s) to our contacts on the island who can ensure that these supplies are distributed directly to those in need.
If travel is restored to the island, meet the container and coordinate the distribution.
Our stretch goal will be to get a container to St Thomas and one to St John.
We will be fully transparent and provide an accounting of the expenditures for the supplies and transportation on this website and on the Go Fund Me page.
