So...
We seem to have hit a sticking point. In January, we packed up all of our belongings into our car (we = me, the kiddo and 2 dogs) and traveled from the East Coast to Western Colorado for a job that turned out to be a lemon. Unfortunately, the negative attitude and low pay just didn't work out as a combo.
BUT we made it back to the mountains, and have been LOVING our new surroundings, living in an efficiency in a mountain cabin. The kiddo has found friends and activities and he's in HEAVEN here - I mean, he can run around outside in his underwear EVERY DAY!
Now, the car has broken down right before school is supposed to start! Go figure! The repair bill for the car? $2500. At 11 years old and with 170k miles, she needs the entire front end replaced!
Right now she's resting peacefully in the dirt driveway of our rental, as a car losing its wheels on a dirt mountain road sans guardrails would be a bit catastrophic, don't you think?!
The clincher? We happen to live 3.5 miles up a dirt mountain road from the elementary school. And while the kiddo is a strong one, I highly doubt he's going to be up for walking 7 miles a day, especially when the snow hits!
Without transportation, it looks like the kiddo can't get to kindergarten. Without the kid in school AND transportation, I'm not sure how I'll be able to accept a new job (we're 4 miles from the closest bus stop). Without a job/income, I'm not sure how we'll fix the car. Catch-22, eh?!
I'd hate to tell the kiddo he can't go to school when he's over the top excited! And I'd love to be able to accept a new job!

**UPDATE: I've increased our original $2500 get-the-car-fixed limit because our landlord just told us he's planning on moving back in a week and a half, giving us that much time to try to find a place that's 1) available and 2) affordable and thus 3) probably an hour away from where we are now. Meaning we're going to need a deposit somehow - magically - after being out of work for a full month now. I'm working my butt off, so I hope we can do it in time!**
