Speckles needs our help!
She captured my heart the minute I saw her photo at Harris County Animal Shelter. I did not know how small she was, I did not know that mange and ringworm covered half of her body, I just knew that her face spoke to me, and I had to save her.
When I picked Speckles up, I was shocked! She was only about 2 lbs, and hairless all on one side! But her orange ears and sweet disposition stood out immediately. I rushed her to our vet to have her examined.
There we learned that Speckles had a long road ahead of her. She was heartworm positive and had severe demodex mange and ringworm. She stayed under the care of a vet tech while we tried to get the ringworm under control. It was during her treatment for mange that she showed her first signs of neurological distress.
Speckles was staggering, acting drunk, and dragging her back legs. Upon further examination, the vet determined that Speckles was experiencing Ivermectin toxicity. We stopped the drug immediately, and in about 10 days, Speckles made a full recovery.
The vet recommended that we continue her treatment for heartworms and mange with a different drug. We waited over a month to administer it, but a few days later, Speckles was once again a very sick dog.
I woke up to find her laying on the floor, paralyzed in 3 of her legs, only able to move her eyes. She screamed in pain if I moved my hand near her face, and she tried to drag herself across the floor with her one working leg. My heart broke for her.
At Gulf Coast Veterinary Neurology, they initially believed Speckles was suffering from a spinal cord abnormality. X-rays and a MRI were ordered to confirm the diagnosis and plan for her treatment. The neurologist was shocked to learn that there were no obvious spinal abnormalities.
At this time, the specialist has no diagnosis and no answers. We are moving forward with an experimental lipid treatment in case Speckles is suffering from moxidectin induced neurotoxicity. She will need ongoing monitoring and care, and additional tests to try and determine what happened to her. Until she is able to eat again, she will need IV therapy to avoid hypoglycemia.
We will not give up on her. As a rescue, we strive to be loyal to our dogs even in the face of tremendous odds, but we cannot do it without your help.
