Spark Charter School is a non-profit public K-8 school in Sunnyvale, CA., that is three years old and going strong with 250 students. We embrace the educational philosophy of project-based learning, social-emotional intelligence, and parent partnerships to keep our students engaged, our families involved, and our community rich with scholastic opportunities and choices. We are a culturally, ethnically, and racially diverse school with a bright future in the community.
We are at the height of our growth curve in year three, which will diminish next year and stabilize in year 2019-20, much as occurs in other new charter schools. Rapid growth is necessary for long term survival, but creates financial strain in the short term due to charter schools funding for students who enter in August isn't provided until March. Schools absorb the cost of educating these students for eight months before receiving the funds they are due. Well funded charter associations with multiple schools do not have this issue. For our grassroots, community-based school it has been a strain. Our tight financial situation was the prime reason the county board declined to extend our petition for five years, despite several board members applauding our educational program. We are appealing the county board of education decision.
Many of our students come from other schools where they were bullied and afraid to go to school(one of our students was physically accosted everyday by other students), where they were not taught in a way they responded to and could flourish under, but rather forced to fit into a mold that many students fit into, but not all. Our children spoke at our local Board of Education renewal hearing of these harrowing stories of previous school environments with such emotion that you could hear their voices waver, but each stood strong to be heard.
Our parents have donated and donated again, but it isn't enough for our survival. So we are also appealing to our larger community to help us. Help us retain and grow a creative and effective educational option for Sunnyvale and it's neighboring communities.
