About this project
The association Save Middles has set out to preserve the existing surf spot Middles east of Hanstholm, Denmark. In the past 10 years, we have continually had to struggle with authorities about the ability to surf at Middles east of the harbor in Hanstholm. As of September, 2017, we are now struggling with the planning of three very large wind turbines very close to Middles.
Through the processing of the matter, local authorities have overruled objections from local non surfers, the local surf club NASA located in Klitmøller and the organization Friends of Cold Hawaii. The consequence is that three wind turbines are now being built at Middles.
When realizing that local organizations were overruled, we had to make a stand and filed two complaints about the authorities’ decision and handling of the process.
In order to make sure the complaint is relevant and valid, we have engaged a lawyer to research the case, provide us with counselling and produce the actual complaint including documentation.
Until now two complaints have been filed to "Miljø- og Fødevarer Klagenævnet" which is the official board of appeal for citizens in Denmark regarding such matters.
So far these complaints have opened the opportunity of negotiating a better solution balancing surf activities and harbour development.
Naturally, we hold on tightly to the filed complaints until a reasonable agreement have been negotiated!
So far more than1.200 people from all over the world have supported the complaints. Thank you! Your voices make a difference and make it possible to get the media’s attention.
But we do need your support once more. We are still engaging our lawyer frequently in order to find solutions navigating within the Danish system and now it is time to pay the first bill.
If you wish to support the case with an economic contribution to cover the cost of the attorney in connection with this case, now is the time to back the association Save Middles.
We are a strong team behind the Save Middles board, but without you guys, we will only be a drop in the ocean of political and industrial forces navigating in the current situation.
Our intentions
The association Save Middles work very hard to preserve and develop the surf spot Middles. We wonder about the municipality's lack of understanding of the benefits of hosting one of Northern Europe's unique recreational areas.
Therefor we are on a mission to document the activities in the area in order to identify the potential of Middles from an economic perspective.
With great help of the ambassadors of Middles a user survey has been conducted and a report that analyzes the economic value of Middles as a recreational area has been made.
By linking data from a user survey with numbers from Visit Denmark, the annual total economic impact of Middles is estimated to be between 5.9 - 27.2 million DKK.

Our mindset
We focuses on the common good outcomes of our communities of Middles. Doing so by pulling upon all the institutional tools in our communities beyond our traditional sole focus on government alone. We acknowledges that the most pressing issues facing our communities are full of complexity and lie beyond the capabilities of any one institutional form. Institutions such as governments, businesses, non-profit and non-governmental organizations are all purpose built to achieve certain goals and none of them are designed to do everything well. When we weaving these tools together we gain the capacity to sustain movement forward.
Risks and challenges
For whatever result we end up with, we hope that you will support our current work!
If we do not have the support of the crowd, a risk in not having funds is that the cause Save Middles will be weakened economically and as a political signal.
Your donations will support the case with a strong legal support when negotiating with authorities.
Also your donation will manifest that there is an interest in and care for the recreational area of Middles. This is a strong signal to the local community of Thy and citizens that are sharing the resources of Cold Hawaii.
What do I get in return for my donation?
This is the most impactful way you can say Thank You for all the hard work we put into saving Middles! We are currently spending all our spare time negotiating with stakeholders, putting ourself out there trying to find solutions for a surfing future at Middles.
We are the stinging jellyfish army of Neptune; an important organism in the ecosystem of Middles!
You make it possible for the association to consult our lawyer whenever necessary in our work to find better solutions.
You also receive a membership of the association Save Middles. The membership is worth 50 DKK (6,7 EURO) and is a one-time payment. (There is no yearly payment).
