Save Macrine's Lungs

Dear friends, family, loved ones, and those who answer prayers,

I’ve always been the person giving – to work, to family, to friends. From dedicating my career to working for nonprofit organizations in Uganda, to supporting the grandmother who raised me, I never thought I would be in the position to have to ask others for support. But with no other choice, I am humbly requesting that you read on.

For the past year I have been battling Thoracic Endometriosis. The tissue which normally lines the inside of my uterus has grown in my lungs, causing internal bleeding, buildup of fluid, and indescribable pain. So far one major surgery (Thoracotomy and Pleurodesis) has been done in Uganda and the fluid has been drained seven times. I have spent countless hours in hospital beds watching blood drain from parts of my body where it should not be. I am still not recovered from my last surgery but unfortunately God doesn’t always give you time to heal before the next catastrophe. All this hasn’t helped and my condition is instead worsening. The endometriosis has escalated – the tissue is now not only in my chest cavity but also in my stomach.

When I first began this campaign, my lungs and belly were filled with fluid. Walking, sitting, and even breathing was a challenge. I was constantly choking from the fluid in my lungs, suffering from heavy chest pains, and the fluid in my belly had compressed my liver and escalated the pain.

Some endometriosis is treatable in Uganda but my version of thoracic endometriosis is beyond the medical capabilities here. So, with no other option, and thanks to the wonderful support of you all, I traveled to India to get the surgery and care I need.

While I did go to India, unfortunately I returned without surgeries happening. A lot of tests were done and at the end of the day they concluded that I should stop all the medication I have been taking so that the endometriosis tissue in the lungs and belly - which have been suppressed by the medication - might grow. Then, in 2-3 months I should go back for the surgeries of both the chest and belly so that the grown tissues can be cut out.

I further went to Germany to consult another specialist and I was told the same thing. So as of now I plan to stop the current medication, though it’s really scary, so that I allow the disease to advance and be seen. Unfortunately, that is the only way the surgeries can happen.

Some of you might be wondering why the surgeries haven't happened yet despite the donations. None of the doctors are willing to do the surgeries unless I'm off the medication for at least 2months. The surgeries would be a waste of money if I'm not off the medication for at least 2 months because they will not be able to remove enough of the tissue right now.

My current condition:
I'm not fine. I'm still in a lot of pain. As if the lungs and belly weren't enough, the liver has added itself on the list of pain. It has enlarged in size but so far no doctor can tell why. The specialist in Germany opted to make a biopsy on it in case I decide to have the surgeries from Germany.

Financial stand point:
After all the traveling, tests and consultations, this has taken a toll on funds you have all so generously contributed to me. I have tried to be economical as much as possible. However, the amount is no longer enough to cover the impending surgeries. Out of the contributed amount and my own little savings I'm left with $10,000. For surgeries to happen in India I need a minimum of $15,000. And for surgeries to happen in Germany I will need $24,000. I trust the specialists in Germany more but will settle for the same procedures in India if I cannot raise the funds.

Our original fundraising goal was $14,500. We were able to meet this but unfortunately the remainder no longer covers what is needed. So, where is your money going now?

I know you have already sacrificed a lot for me. But in case there is any more you can do please help. I'm scared of going off the medicine without being sure that I can afford the surgeries because it will really take a toll on me.

Please help me share this campaign.

 Thank you my heroes.

With love and appreciation,
Macrine Bakesiima

Some additional information:

This page has been set up by me, Leah Newman (and a loving group of Macrine's friends). I am American but live in Uganda. I'm not related to Macrine by blood, but instead by love and friendship. Macrine has no parents or siblings and so her friends are her family. The funds raised here will be used solely for expenses related to Macrine's medical needs, as outlined above.

As Macrine's bank account is in Uganda (a non-GoFundMe Country) and the expenses will be incurred abroad, I will be withdrawing the funds from this account and taking the responsibility of paying the airfare, hospital bill, accommodation, and all that stuff directly. The costs are already incurring and will be payed immediately as needed. Please let me know of any questions or concerns on how the funds are being handled.
