THE LA JOLLA ART ASSOCIATION NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT TO SAVE A 100-YEAR LEGACY
Founded in 1918, the La Jolla Art Association (LJAA) has been open to artists and to the public, exhibiting exquisite works of art by local painters, providing instruction by professional artists, hosting community events, and offering a gallery to admire and purchase some of the best art in Southern California.
With your support, the La Jolla Art Association will continue to serve the La Jolla Community and not have to close its doors on its 100-year anniversary.
Funds raised this year will help cover annual gallery expenses, renovate exhibition spaces, and support other initiatives for members, artists, and the public.

100-YEAR LEGACY:
The La Jolla Art Association first began in 1918 when a group of artists came together to sketch and picnic in the beautiful landscapes of La Jolla, California. After sketching, they would visit the home of Miss Ellen Browning Scripps, a famous San Diegan benefactor who was very interested in their art.
One of the talented artists, Mrs. Eleanor Parkes, decided to create an art organization and the La Jolla Art Association (LJAA) was born. Miss Scripps joined forces with LJAA to build a library where their art could be featured.
In 1929, during the depression, many artists were not able to keep up their dues. Despite the extreme hardships, by coming together to support each other, none of the artists were suspended and the La Jolla Art Association persisted.
In 1955, the City of San Diego joined forces with La Jolla’s library to meet the growing needs of the community. To keep the City from taking over the Art Gallery space, the LJAA made an agreement with the library to pay $1 per year to keep their original space.
In 1988, the buildings belonging to the library, and housing the La Jolla Art Association, were designated historic sites.
In 2002, the library informed the La Jolla Art Association that they would not renew the 50-year lease in 2005, causing them to move locations to 8100 Paseo Del Ocaso, and the rent to jump from $1 per year to $2,500 per month.
In 2018, the La Jolla Art Association’s funds are being depleted and we are currently using our last remaining savings to cover the monthly operating costs.
For 100 years, the La Jolla Art Association has been the most steadfast in the county.
Without your financial support, the La Jolla Art Association will be forced to close its doors by the summer of 2018.
