Who is JJ , you may wonder? That is the name of my kidney transplant. The name came to me after surgery. My name is Lily and this is my story.
My health had been deteriating for the past few months. I have had fatigue , dehydration (to the point of losing my voice) aches and pains but I hadn't been eating right and work as a waitress so expect to be tired . As you see I had a reason for everything.
My family and co workers begged me to go to the doctor but I was hard headed and said "I will if it gets worse" oh it got worse alright. Last Thursday I was sent home from work for not feeling well and decided to take Friday off. Around 8:00 I had spontaneous vomiting and decided first thing Monday morning I would call the doctor, but around 9:00 I went to the bathroom and my urine was bloody so I went to the ER. When I gave a sample there it was violet. You should have seen the look on the doctor's face. I hadn't had any pain over my graft, decrease in urine output or anything of that nature so it was shocking to find out I was in kidney failure with creatine level 13, calcium 3 and critical electrolytes.
I was transported to Emory immediately where I have been since March 7 and will remain for a while.
I never thought I would make a gofundme account as I try to be independent. Reaching out for help has always been something I struggle with, but as I was lying in bed the other night having anxiety about how I was going to buy the medicine when I get out or how I was going to pay the rent next month since I haven't worked I thought "why not" if noone donates then I am in the same situation. So I made an account.
Initially, my goal was 750.00 ( 500.00 for medicine plus the fee charged) but have increased it due to all the expenses. My goal was met within hours. 1,900 was raised in two days. Isn't that amazing?! Most of the donations came from people I have never physically met. The love and support whether monetary, prayers, positive thoughts or checking in has been a humbling experience and I realize how lucky I am to have such generous souls in my life. How do you thank someone for such ? It is impossible to convey the gratitude I feel but I thank every one of you for every thing you have done. Y'all have been amazing!
A little background. I have a vascular disease called Wegener's Granulomatosis which causes scar tissue in the organs and they shut down. This is intital cause of the kidney failure and needing a transplant. Fortunately, it has been inactive since 1986 and unlikely to return but it is the reason for needing a kidney to begin with. I had a transplant from 1987-2000 but then went back on dialysis where I remained for 10 years until I was able to receive another transplant in Feb. 2010. For the most part I have done well but I am having problems with rejection right now. I am taking comfort in knowing that my doctor is able to treat the rejection and I have a chance of recovery. If not I will go back on dialysis indefinitely as I am ineligible for another. I will remain hospitalized for a while .
Often when we think of donating we think we have to donate a large amount in order for it to count but that isn't true. Every single dollar is one dollar towards the goal which will help with all the expenses.
