For over 3 years, myself and an incredible and dedicated team have worked together to build what we believe could be one the most positive and beneficial tech startups in the world. We don't say this lightly, the app and platform that we built utilizes the latest social media technologies and innovations - but applies them squarely to good. 

With HelpHero, you donate through an app that looks like TikTok and someone is sent out like DoorDash to put your funds to use and get you a video back showing exactly how your donation was spent and who or what it helped.

It solves one of the biggest problems when donating money by letting you see, actually, how your specific money is put to use and with videos at the core, everything is engaging and shareable and it causes a snowball effect of inspiration and good feelings that emerge from your soul when you see firsthand the effect of helping someone in need. 

  

The concept was started and tested in San Francisco to help the homeless and the response was clear and immediate. Donors were brought to tears, people would come up on the street and put money in our hands and say "just keep doing what you're doing". The concept was incredible and Cole, the founder, set out to bring HelpHero to the world.

As the concept was emerging Cole met one of my life long best friends, a tall beautiful woman and they fell deeply in love and she became his first co-founder. Later, they moved from San Francisco to her hometown in Auburn California and had a baby, just a few hours away from Silicon Valley.

Eventually, after the app had taken multiple years to build but was not yet complete, she decided to leave the relationship and the company but they both still cared and loved each other and agreed to work together as equal but separate parents to raise their little boy. 

I became a co-founder and the lead investor, and my home in Auburn became the HelpHero headquarters. Both Cole and his ex were integral parts of their son's life, and we all constantly interacted on very friendly terms. 

Cole was a truly devoted and incredible Dad.

He saw his son constantly and enjoyed every bit of time with him. I saw him plan special events and outings every single week. They hiked, went to parks, birthday parties, music shows, traveled the country to visit family and much more. The little boy adored his Dad and he was a constant fixture at my home and office where we worked. 

 

As the HelpHero platform began to become functional and we started to test it, the significance of what we built was obvious.

The platform was helping the homeless in Auburn, funding local animal shelters and putting kids in school in Africa. The concept was incredible and investors agreed.

We got patent pending status, filed trademarks and did 10 investor meetings and received 11 investments. This was unprecedented and we were on a trajectory to the moon. The team's energy was on fire and everyone knew that we were on to something powerful that could change the world.

But, a problem emerged that would shake everything to its core..

As excitement, energy and funding were heating up with the company, Cole's ex started growing tired of sharing decision making in regards to their son and she and her mother purposely tricked him and got their little boy jabbed at the hospital while they were in discussion on the matter but hadn't yet agreed. When she tried to do it a second time, he got the hospital to notify him and arrived for the appointment to discuss. 

When he got there, the staff walked him back to the appointment room, but they locked it from the inside, refused to let him in and disregarded his lack of consent as he stood there just feet away and they proceeded with the jab. 

They then called the police from within the locked room to be escorted out after committing this overstep on something they knew was deeply important to Cole.

The police arrived and they were professional and helpful. The head officer turned off his body cam and told Cole he should sue the hospital because they didn't have a right to block him and proceed without consent as they just did. Three officers watched from about 30 feet away as he walked up to meet his ex in the parking lot to check on his son.

His ex and her mother sped off as the officers watched and the officers then walked over and talked to Cole and continued to be helpful and gave guidance on what next steps he should take.

To everyone's surprise, a few days later Cole was served a notice that he was accused of domestic violence claiming to have occurred in that parking lot and a "temporary" order immediately went into effect that essentially removed all rights to his son at that very moment before he even got a chance to respond and without any evidence or even a claim of injury except that his ex felt scared. 

Luckily - three police officers were right there watching just 30 feet away during the entire interaction and they reported that nothing happened. 

The police report said right on it "All parties left, neg crime".

We all assumed this would get cleared up right away when Cole took that into court.

As we came to find out, the court would have almost no care whatsoever of the police report or what was reasonable and obvious and this would be the beginning of a nearly year long monumental battle in which Cole was forced to learn the legal system and defend himself against a lawyer backed by his ex's mother, a millionaire, and with the real and obvious outcome deciding if his 3 year old son would get to have his father in his life.

As the case drug on and on, the "temporary" custody orders were repeatedly continued at every court interaction. Cole was requesting the matter be heard at once because there was not even any significant allegation and yet the court process was causing incredible harm and disruption to his life, livelihood and son, but the court proceeded to find reasons for delay. 

All HelpHero core features had finally been completed and the platform moved into a live "beta" test. The app was absolutely incredible. Everyone who saw it went crazy about it.

The app was ready for full-scale launch with our team standing by, but our CEO was caught in the most devastating fight of his life to prevent losing access to his son.

We all thought it would end soon, but it didn't, and without clarity investments were paused and salaries, plans and rent payments stopped - eventually forcing my childhood home that we worked out of into foreclosure and Cole had to face trial from alternating hotel rooms.

Despite this, Cole pushed forward.

Video evidence showed that new allegations against him were outrightly false. Witness testimony against him collapsed. Fraudulently represented messages were exposed and the court was made aware that his ex had completely stopped complying with even the limited visitation orders and wasn't allowing him to see their son at all.

The trial was essentially over.

Cole requested it be ended at that time, it was obvious to everyone in the courtroom that he had defeated all evidence and it was not necessary to proceed further.

The judge understood but said that technically speaking Cole was still owed an opportunity to present more evidence before the ruling was finalized so he scheduled one more hearing just a week out. 

Cole waited the week for the final trial day which we expected would finally be the end and allow for the unblocking of HelpHero investments, restore salaries to team members and bring Cole and his son back together.

Instead, the unthinkable happened.

Cole was arrested moments BEFORE the final trial started.

On his way to court, Cole parked under a tree to organize his documents. About 20 minutes later a police officer approached and asked for ID - Cole was careful not to refuse, but he didn't offer it immediately and instead explained he hadn’t been pulled over or suspected of a crime and that he was on his way to trial.

The officer grew impatient and then suddenly grabbed Cole through the window of his car while he had both arms raised in the air and shouted “STOP RESISTING”. They drug him out and threw him in jail for two days and refused even to let him pay bail, all for the supposed crime of "delaying".

With Cole in jail, the nearly year long trial with his ex was heard in his absence, ruled against him, and custody of his son was claimed to be given to his ex for 3 years.  

Cole appeared at the soonest follow up hearing and alerted the court that he was prevented from attending his trial and that the orders were also void due to major errors written and them missing critical visitation information that would allow him to be able to see his son at all. The commissioner handling the matter ignored all of this and legally advised Cole to follow the void orders or face arrest.

Friends, family and investors were shocked and confused learning Cole supposedly had lost the trial and was thrown in jail instead.

Investments that were committed and which were planned to arrive after the trial was won were halted in the confusion. With no other choice Cole was forced to pack everything he owned into a storage unit and go to the east coast and stay with friends and family and attempt to amend the multiple court matters and relaunch HelpHero remotely.

The court was threatening to put Cole in jail for 1 year for the delay of showing ID and it appeared they intended to do that.

But Cole stood on his constitutional rights and refused to accept any fault for the "delay" matter because doing so might affect the resolution of the custody concern that was heard in his absence.

Just as the previous matter at the court, this simple "delay" allegation that caused no injury or harm to anyone forced Cole to an 8 month battle of near continual court process and research to fight it.

During this time I also suddenly faced the biggest battle of my life, a life threatening injury that left it unclear if I would walk again. 

The hopes and dreams of HelpHero were dim.

... But I did not give up.

... Cole did not give up. 

... And the HelpHero team, did not give up. 

Behind the scenes, Cole and I worked together to reform deals and contracts to bring the HelpHero team back together and to bring on a new and highly experienced CEO who could carry the incredible concept through its next and much larger post-launch stage.

I have fully recovered, the HelpHero team and new CEO have signed contracts to proceed and Cole's "delay" of ID trial has now been DISMISSED!

Final Family Note: I want to mention that Cole has always said that he believes that his ex and her mother were effectively tricked by the lawyers and court process and led down this path. He still cares about them, and hopes nothing more than for them to simply drop the matter and all work together again as a family so their son can have both parents in his life.
