Hadassah School for the Orphaned and Destitute

Hadassah is a School for destitute and orphaned children in the slums of Nakuru, Kenya. The School provides a vital service to children in the community who have no other prospect of an education. However the school desperately needs to raise funds to pay off its mortgage otherwise it faces eviction and destruction of the facilities that have been built so far. Any contributions no matter how small will help.

Hadassah School for the Orphaned and Destitute
Hadassah School was founded on 3rd January 2011 and originated from a feeding programme, which provided meals to very poor families in the community. It soon became apparent that the children being fed also wanted to be educated and Hadassah School was subsequently founded. The School was originally located on 2 hectares of land in the Mwariki Slum of Nakuru county, Kenya. This land was originally rented and unfortunately in October 2012 the rent on the land was quadrupled and the school was forced to vacate this site. The school now is now at a nearby site, still in the Mwariki slum, but is now crowded into only a quarter of a hectare.

Since its inception Hadassah has expanded its student intake from 90 to the current number of 236. It is a strictly non-fee paying school and so targets to provide education for underprivileged children, whose families cannot afford to send their children to school. The Children have incredibly difficult home lives, with food hard to come by and often having been left to fend for themselves on the streets. Whilst at school, the children are fed a porridge breakfast and a filling lunch, allowing the children to learn without worrying about being hungry.

The school is also involved in providing support and counselling to both parents and children, in matters such as nutrition and health. The school provides a referral system for parents with HIV and AIDS, advising them where they can obtain Anti-Retro Viral (ARV) drugs. This is of particular issue to the school as HIV is prevalent amongst both the children and their parents.

The long term aim of the school is to become self-sustaining and no longer have to heavily rely on donations and volunteers. It has started doing this by setting up a tent and chair rental business as well as a uniform business. The School employs parents of the students in an effort to provide employment and skills to the wider community. Despite this the school has not yet reached its target of self sufficiency and cannot yet raise close to its required funds.

Why Hadassah Needs Help

When Hadassah was evicted from its former location due to a huge increase in rent, they made a decision to buy land rather than face the same issue again. However due to their desperate situation the school was in they needed to raise £8000 in six months. The money was due to be paid on the 2nd August 2013. However as of now the school has only been able to raise £3000. Since then the School has been in talks with the previous owners and an ultimatum of 30th September has been set. By this date the school must pay an initial £1550 or be evicted. If they meet this target they will be given another six month extension in which to pay off the remaining £3500. If the money cannot be raised soon, then it may well become impossible for Hadassah to continue providing its vital services to the community.
