SAVING EMILY
The Story
Just over two years ago, my mom, Emily Davis, was diagnosed with a Grade III brain tumor (Anaplastic Astrocytoma). Unfortunately, at the time of her diagnosis, we were told the success rate for a favorable outcome has been very low. Through multiple surgeries, radiation and treatments, Emily has fought a courageous battle and responded well to initial treatments. In the summer of 2013, she suffered a debilitating stroke that paralyzed the left side of her body and left her in need of individualized care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Despite the weakness in Emily’s body, her mind is still strong, and she continues to work very hard to regain her independence. Her progress since she came home from the Shepherd Rehabilitation Center last September has been amazing and is a testament to her determination.
Along with her ongoing rehabilitation, the best chance for a long term recovery, and a cancer free life, lies in promising new research and technology that has shown proven success in animal testing. There is much to be done and time is of the essence. Anaplastic Astrocytoma has a high rate of recurrence.
This research involves nanoparticles also known as iron oxide. These nanoparticles have proven successful in targeting glioma-like stem cells. Glioma-like stem cells are believed to be responsible for initial tumor formation and tumor regrowth. The use of nanoparticles will make it easier for physicians to target and destroy these cells before they can become killers.
Dr. Costas Hadjipanayis (Dr. Hadji) at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta has effectively treated mice and large canines implanted with these tumors. Dr, Hadji is working on bringing this technology to human trials to treat tumors like Emily’s. However, this technology is expensive and Dr. Hadji needs funding to bring this promising technology to successful fruition. The results of this development can have real impact on Emily and hundreds of thousands of other people facing her diagnosis now and in the future. It is believed that nanoparticles will be used to treat many forms of cancer.
This is the crucial time to help save Emily. In addition to helping to fund Dr. Hadji’s research, some of the donations will be used for her physical therapy and additional medical expenses, which insurance no longer covers. While we have a goal of $50,000, every penny is a step towards returning Emily, and others like her, to good health.
