As of 7/28/20, we have raised over $635,000 in larger donor pledges + our GoFundMe campaign dollars. We're over halfway there but still have work ahead of us. Every dollar counts!
On 6/19/20, the Winthrop Board of Trustees, without notice, eliminated the most successful athletic program in the university's history... the men's and women's tennis programs. In addition to many jaw dropping stats of success, since 2000, Winthrop Tennis accounts for 23 Conference titles. All other sports combine for 26. Our athletes constantly ranking at the top of all sports for academic success too. Currently, the Winthrop tennis teams account for nearly 20% of all international students enrolled at Winthrop. What has happened is an outrage!
We have put together a detailed 5+ year fiscally responsible restructuring and financial plan that includes tennis court renovations, and we need your help to achieve this goal!
To give generously ($1,000+) through a Letter of Intent that is protected through contingency upon the reinstatement of the teams, or for non-cash donations please contact [email redacted]
The decision reduces to ashes one of the hardest comeback stories in the United States sports history. In 1993, a member of the Winthrop Tennis team lost his life (while critically injuring others) to a tragic van accident while returning from a tournament. The team regrouped to become stronger and won the 1997 Big South Conference title. It was felt by the whole Rock Hill community forever.
Why was there no option given to the program to save itself?
Why was a donor’s significant contribution to help renovate our tennis courts ignored?
How was the programs historic levels of success overlooked?
How does one close the door on the memory and sacrifice from the men’s 1993 team?
There are so many questions about WHY and HOW this happened, but we want to look toward the future and figure out how we can solve this! Our student-athletes are shocked and heartbroken over the news and we owe it to them. The fact is, WE CAN GET REINSTATED!
Once an Eagle, always an Eagle!
We are asking for every alumni, fan of tennis or advocate for justice to help us spread the word. Share this campaign and share your own videos. Be sure to hashtag #SaveWinthropTennis. Like and follow us onFacebook and Instagram.Every like, share and comment counts!
