Save Waldo’s Heart ❤️

The newest addition to our family has severe and debilitating heartworms that, if untreated, will cost him his life. With gratitude, we share the synchronistic story of how he joined our family and filled our home with love.

Waldo’s Story

Waldo came into our lives unexpectedly, but at just the right time. Our loving two-year-old terrier mix lived in the woods for an extended period of time, likely around six months. He was rescued and brought to Nature’s Pet Day Spa in Gainesville, FL where he received incredible love and care from his wonderful grooming team and Newberry Animal Hospital. My husband Aaron and I inquired about adopting him separately—me on Facebook; Aaron in person, at the groomer. We weren’t actively looking for another dog, but something about Waldo felt right, as if he were meant to be part of our family.

Waldo met Buster, our 16-year-old shitzu poodle mix, and they got along well enough. (Buster is a sweet but aging and somewhat grumpy little lump who prefers to be alone or with a few humans at a time.) We knew Waldo could become Buster’s seeing eye dog, as our old man is nearly 100% blind in both eyes. We also knew a companion could help keep Buster with us longer. And, after living alone for so long, we hoped Waldo would find a friend and companion in Buster. Thankfully, that happened within just a few weeks, and the two are now buds.

Waldo’s Condition

We knew Waldo had heartworms when we adopted him, but chose to love him anyway. We were not aware until recent extensive testing how far-reaching and damaging the parasite is. Our baby is full of adult and baby worms that have led to an enlarged heart, clogged arteries, and other internal issues. He is in poor shape, but with the proper care and support, we and his vets are hopeful he will recover and live with us for a long time.

Our Love for Him

Waldo has been the perfect addition to our small family, and we love him beyond words. For the past month, we keep repeating some variation of: “Who knew Waldo was meant for us and exactly who we needed? We can’t believe he chose us.” Even though we haven’t had him for very long, we believe he is meant to live with us for many years and will do whatever it takes to support his health and well-being.

I didn’t know I could love another living being as much as I love Aaron and Buster. Within minutes, Waldo filled a hole in our lives we didn’t even know existed. And we knew we were in his to offer him the happiest and healthiest life possible.
