Save the Western Cycle Neon Sign!

Donation protected

Hi! My name is Kelso Brennan. As the President of The Alberta Sign Association (ASA), we are reaching out to Edmontonian's to help SAVE THE ICONIC WESTERN CYCLE NEON SIGN which we plan to remove from its original location at 10429 and 124 Street, and have it fully restored, to be on public display for all to enjoy. Once its restored the plan is to install it at the Edmonton Neon Sign Museum. Although the ASA has a modest budget to maintain the existing signs currently in the museum, all restoration, installations and removals have been donated by Edmonton Sign Companies. The City of Edmonton provided funding to the ASA to help maintain existing signs, and TELUS and The Mercer donate the electrical power which lights up the Neon Museum.

Unfortunately, due to the new proposed roof mounted method at it's future location in the Museum, and the size of Western Cycle's signage, we're looking for Edmontonian's patronage to help with the costs of the physical restoration and engineering. It's our hope to have this large iconic sign relocated to Downtown Edmonton and be fully functional this year. Your contribution is directly related to repairing the internal electrical components, creating new neon tubing and restoring the paint to it's original glory. One of the unforeseen costs for this particular sign is the structural engineering and fabrication for a new frame, which will require the use of a special boom lift and we will need to meet wind load & structural weight requirements. We certainly appreciate your public support for our Not-For-Profit organization!

UPDATE: For any donations over $250, the ASA will add your name (if desired) to the proposed commemorative plaque, thanking you for your support, which will be located directly below the sign, mounted to the wall of the Edmonton Neon Sign Museum.

The ASA and City of Edmonton have a backlog of historical neon signs in storage which are awaiting restoration. If our fundraising campaign ends up raising more than the goal, every additional dollar raised will be put towards further developing the Edmonton Neon Sign Museum and saving more iconic local Neon Signs.

Edmonton's Neon Sign Museum has become a hot spot for professional photography, events and recognition for Edmonton's rich entrepreneurial history. The Alberta Sign Association generously organized the restoration of the signs. Several of their members, including Skyline Sign Services, Blanchett Neon, PM Signs, Advantage Signs, Landale Signs, City Neon, Hi Signs | The Fath Group, General Signs, Newlook Signs and Sign Force, have committed parts, materials, staff and time to restore the signs.

The Neon Sign Museum is possible thanks to a partnership between the City of Edmonton, the Alberta Sign Association, TELUS, the Downtown Business Association and The Places, as well as dozens of local volunteer sign companies who perform the restoration and installation of historic Neon Signs. We can certainly use your continued support! Thank you!
