Save the South Main Stray Dog "Stan"

Meet Stan! You may know her by another name perhaps a name you've given her yourself from seeing her roaming around South Main for months. Stan is a stray and has been hanging out downtown, particularly on West Carolina Avenue, for a few months now. We're not really sure where she came from or why she chose this spot as her stomping grounds, but we're so grateful she did. You see, Stan has a way of bringing people together for good and for a bigger cause. She may not know how big of an impact she's made, but something tells me she might.
Over the past few months, Stan has been fed by a group of people that live and work in the area. Plus the occasionally visitors who spot her and are kind enough to stop and offer her food or water. The only problem being, Stan is VERY timid and cautious of humans. She would not let anyone get close to her whatsoever. She loved the treats, but was always careful to not let anyone get within arms reach of her. Then news about Stan hanging out in the South Main area started to spread.
On August 13 a thread about Stan was started on Nextdoor. A group of neighbors realized they all had been seeing her regularly and feeding her when they could. But, with the temps rising and Stan lingering around W Carolina more often the group made a plan for making sure Stan didn't go without fresh water or food. Some neighbors were offering to buy and drop off food, while others were filling and refilling her bowls daily. Soon Stan was on a feeding schedule and became very familiar with the locals as feeding her.
Each day Stan would show more signs of becoming comfortable with humans and wanting to be rescued. She would follow behind us for blocks, show up at a familiar doorstep and even wag her tail from time to time in excitement. Huge milestones in a matter of days! Stan went from a dog who always had her tail between her legs to a dog showing signs that she was ready to trust again. With more and more chatter about Stan on social media we knew we needed to create a plan for rescuing her to insure she would receive proper care and go to a good home.
Friday September 4th around 3pm we set a trap for her to sniff and check out. After about 45 minutes we removed the trap. Later that evening we delayed her normal feeding so she would be a little hungry and set the trap again. It took all of 15 minutes before she made her way into the trap and the rescue was successful! She was in no way harmed or traumatized. She was absolutely calm. It was as though she knew what was going to happen and she was ready for it, because she was finally ready to trust humans again and find her forever home.
Stan is now in the wonderful hands of the vets and techs at Grace Animal Hospital. We will know soon all the treatments she is in need of but we're fairly certain she has eye infections, could possibly be heartworm positive, require all her shots and need to be spayed. That amount of care will cost a lot of money! Can we come together again as a community to see this rescue through to the end and make sure our sweet girl Stan gets the care she needs? Please help us reach our goal, even if it's just $10 it will make a difference.
