How SCAC Started:

The people that built and designed our building probably did not envision how much it would serve our community and impact the lives of people for so many years. Built in 1915 for the cost of $17,775.00, it was used as the Salem High School. Nine years later in 1924, the gymnasium was completed at a cost of $65,000.00. Used as a high school from 1915 to 1950, this building was a source of education and a variety of scholastic and athletic activities. In 1951, Salem Community High School was moved to its present location, and the building became the Junior High School and was used to educate sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. In 1959, the existing cafeteria, second and third floor classrooms, and band room were added as the school's population grew. In 1979, Franklin Park School was completed and the children were moved there to continue their education. The building sat empty from this time until Thelma Bailey purchased it at auction in 1981. This woman's drive and determination began the process of turning the abandoned building into what it is today. Mrs. Bailey invested over $100,000.00 of her own money to make several of the initial and vital repairs and then formed a volunteer Board of Directors to oversee and operate the center.

Who We Are & What SCAC Does Today:

We have over 30,000 visits per year from individuals using the center. The center's day starts at 8:00 a.m. with people that meet and socialize as they walk the gym and the halls of the center. It is used as a place for many of Salem Park and Recreation programs, Food Pantry, open gym, Red Cross blood drives, and much more. The center is also used for wedding receptions, class reunions, birthday parties, business meetings, Salem Chamber of Commerce Home & Ag show, etc. The center hosts its own annual fund-raisers as well. Events at SCAC bolster other local businesses, like bars and restaurants. The typical event attendee spends time and money in our town, which means that these organizations will be leaders in the financial recovery of their communities.

Yesterday, today, and tomorrow the Center has and will continue to strive to meet the needs of our community!

Here’s our goal:

The impact of COVID-19 is being felt across the country and communities big and small, in ways we could have never imaged. Beyond the global health crisis, the coronavirus is having severe impacts on individuals, small businesses, not for profits and health care organizations.

The goal of this fundraiser is to ensure that Salem Community Activities Center can remain a viable resource for OUR community.

How Will Funds Be Distributed?

Need. Impact. Sustainability.

The intention of this fundraiser is to ensure that Salem Community Activities Center is able to reopen when safe to do so. Funds are intended to support essential payments during closure. Essential payments include those for payroll, insurance, utilities, and fundraising.

Here’s how you can help:

In the most basic form, please start by helping us spread the word.
