The Golden Gate Ranch (the oldest home in Downey built 1871) was established on 9497 Foster Road in South Downey. Edward W. Lewis came from Nebraska to start a new life. His sons Joe and Bill bought 50 acres near Woodruff Avenue and Foster Bridge Road, where they farmed sugar beets and Klondike strawberries. Son Ed C. Lewis bought 25 acres on Foster Road and Ardis Street and opened the Golden Gate Ranch, raising alfalfa, sugar beets, corn and walnuts. The home sits left as a reminder to these days of long ago at 9497 Foster Road in Downey
