Save the Old Country Road Schoolhouse

The Old County Road Schoolhouse has a storied history dating back to the late 1700’s, being referred to as the Old School-house in its early incarnation. The goal of this fundraising effort is to restore and repair the schoolhouse that remains on Wicopee Hill in Brattleboro, VT. The schoolhouse sits on what is now private property, but the owner holds a deep regard for its history and trying to preserve it for generations to come. As you can see from the pictures 150+ years has taken its toll on the old schoolhouse. Below is a list of work to be done on the schoolhouse if we are able to achieve our fundraising goal. If we fall short of the goal, we will do all that we can from this list with the money received.
Our goal is to begin work on the schoolhouse the fall of 2020 or spring of 2021 depending on how fundraising efforts go. The project should take approximately 6-8 months. Upon completion of the project an open house will be held for the community to come enjoy the place where their ancestors went to school and played.

Punchlist of Work:
-Raise foundation approximately 3’ and rebuild the stone foundation with material found on site
-Replace rotting sill plates, floor joists, and flooring with as close to original material as possible
-Replace slate roofing
-Replace windows
-Replace clapboard siding
-Replace rotting rafters and restore ceilings inside of the building
-Uncover and repair plaster walls
-Rebuild raised platform that used to have teacher’s desk on it
-Replace front door with period appropriate door
-Acquire and install period appropriate wood stove
-Replace Chimney
-Sitework
-Acquire period appropriate teacher’s desk
