Save the Kul Kah Han Native Plant Garden

In Chimacum, Washington, there is a unique and beautiful public space, the Kul Kah Han Native Plant Garden. It is one acre of landscaped garden along the forested edge of a salmon creek. The garden is organized into eight different plant communities native to the Pacific Northwest. This remarkable plant collection numbers nearly 300 species. Each has an informative sign describing the plant, its needs, and the conditions in which it grows in the wild.

“Thanks for all your good work with the native plant garden. I really value that. It’s such a good thing. We had my daughter's birthday party at the (salmon) shelter. It was so nice to be there with all the native plants around us with signs on them. I was reminded again of how special that place really is.”

MISSION
The garden was designed 20 years ago by Linda Landkammer who had a vision: to provide a garden featuring plants native to the region, to inspire people to use these plants in their home gardens, to cherish them in the wild, and to feel the thrill of identifying the plants they come to know and enjoy. And to learn to become a part of the solution to sustainable ecology.

THE LOCATION
The garden is in Jefferson County WA at the edge of H.J. Carroll County Park, entertaining a few thousand visitors annually with its disc golf course, basketball courts, baseball fields, a children’s playground area, and trails for runners and dog walkers.  It is open to all, all day, every day. A picnic shelter is allows for gatherings in the heart of this interactive oasis. An informational kiosk with a map to the various garden spaces welcomes visitors as they enter from the parking area. Over 900 feet of gently curving and groomed pathways lead you throughout.

WHAT IS NEEDED AND WHY
The Founder and Director, Linda Landkammer, and the acting co-director Robin Nye are both retiring now that they are in their 80’s. With the loss of these two pivotal people, after two decades and thousands of hours donated, it’s time to pass the baton. Providing fresh energy and leadership to the many dedicated volunteers and staff is needed to maintain the level of excellence the garden has come to be known for. Therefore, a number staff will be recruited, including a Garden Manager and Volunteers Coordinator, among others. Other ongoing financial needs are signage and kiosk restoration, plant material, soil amendments, drip irrigation maintenance, printing, and website development.

WHO BENEFITS?
The park is a popular destination for the community to relax in nature, walk with their children, their dogs, breathe fresh air, and study the plant signs all while safely distanced in a nurturing outdoor space. It has become an important hub where topics overlap and support each other including native plants, botany, gardening, environmentalism, carbon sequestration, permaculture, restoration, conservation, and the ethnobotany of our native peoples.

“I am very familiar with this garden, I have been there many times for inspiration and just to enjoy the beauty”

HOW SOON WE NEED FUNDING
Some funding is needed for immediate use and the remainder of the funds will be used to keep the garden going for at least the next 5 years.

GRATITUDE
This support will be appreciated by many, including homeschooled students who come to learn about native plants, homeowners learning about how to bring natives to their own gardens, landscapers becoming familiar with more drought-tolerant plantings, and budding botanists coming to study the more intricate parts of plants.

We welcome and deeply appreciate, all and every gift we receive.

“I never imagined the native garden would be so extensive and so beautifully laid out and labeled. It’s a wonderful asset for both local residents and visitors.”
~ Deanna Pumplin, Port Townsend 2019
