Save the Historic Structures of Lincoln County

Donation protected
Lincoln Landmarks is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the historic structures of Lincoln County, NC. With a history that reaches back to the mid-1700s, the county is rich in structures that date from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Our formation was in response to the need for an organization dedicated solely to the early architecture of the County. While there are numerous important local structures remaining in the area, many have already been lost or altered beyond recognition. The growth of nearby Charlotte, and the rapid increase of population that Lincoln County is experiencing may endanger some of these historic structures to the point of losing even more.

We are currently raising funds for the purchase and restoration of the Pleasant Retreat Academy, a historic Federal-era building in downtown Lincolnton, built sometime between 1817 and 1820. The Academy is a structure of both local and national importance. Several prominent figures, including the first Governor of Texas, James Pinckney Henderson are included among its alumni.

The restoration of the structure will require significant work to the improve the facade of the building and to repair the substantial rot/damage to the wooden elements of the house including the original sash windows and front door surround.  The building retains many original features which will be kept and restored over time. Our intention is to use the Pleasant Retreat Academy as an event and educational space for the local community. We have put together a comprehensives plan and budget for the restoration and we hope to purchase the structure within the next six months. Within our group, we have significant experience with the restoration of historic structures. Donations at this point will go directly to the down payment for the purchase of the structure. Please see some photos that we've taken of the structure and some of the elements needing repair.
