David Bowie: The Cat Who Fell to Earth
Please help save my wonderful cat, David Bowie!
On September 2, 2018, my sweet, healthy, 5-year old cat fell from my 4th floor deck. I found him in the bushes below, conscious, and surprisingly without any other injuries besides a broken jaw.
I was given 3 options:
1) Surgery, the treatment of choice for his injury (but requires thousands upon thousands of dollars for additional imaging, surgery, follow-up, etc.)
2) Conservative management to see if he can heal on his own, but requires additional imaging and feeding tube placement (but cost $2000+)
3) Say goodbye, knowing he has lived a life full of love
I think it is safe to say that for those of you who know me well, and those who barely know me at all, know how much I adore my cat, how much joy he has brought to my life. I got him as a tiny, 4-week old kitten, who was too small to even jump into his litter box, when his prior owners wanted to get rid of him as soon as possible because of his "spunkiness." While he doesn't like a lot of people and can be rather difficult sometimes, he has been my best friend and has given me company through countless hours of studying, and snuggles through many difficult nights. I am so grateful to be his cat mom and to have gotten to spend this much time with him.
Which made yesterday even harder. Given my current financial state of having just completed medical school, a move across the country, and living paycheck to paycheck while in medical residency, I made the hard decision to say goodbye to my pearl.
...But once I informed the vet of my decision, they offered me financial assistance from their Angel Fund to give David Bowie a chance to heal with conservative management and feeding tube placement.
Whether the offering of financial assistance from the Angel Fund was an answered prayer or a sign from above, I am not sure. But I do know that this will give my boy a chance to do what cats do - use one of their 9-lives and make a miraculous recovery.
However, even with the assistance from the Angel Fund, it has required a significant financial commitment from myself, as well as anticipation of future costs from follow-up visits, and possible future nursing care to help take care of him while I am working long-hours for my medical training.
Any money raised from GoFundMe will be used directly towards David's vet and care bills, and any additional funds will then be donated back to the Angel Fund to help someone in my position in the future. Additionally, once my financial status improves and I complete residency, I will gladly pay it forward and donate back to the Angel Fund which has given me hope.
I am so grateful for every snuggle, belly rub, and kitty bracelet I have had with him, and am so thankful for this opportunity to help him lay in the sun again. Thank you.
