The Black Drop Coffeehouse has served as a community pillar in Bellingham since 2002, providing an all-ages safe space for marginalized groups, an outspoken voice for community advocacy, and a killer cup of coffee. Spaces like this are increasingly scarce, even before the pandemic upended… well, everything.
We’re eager to open in our beautiful, roomy new space just across the street at 206 W Magnolia, which will allow for significantly more indoor and outdoor seating and the opportunity to expand our all-ages community events (post-pandemic!) with open mics, karaoke, and private events. We’ve poured hours of blood, sweat, tears, and bad ‘80s playlists into making it feel like home.
But we need help to reopen our doors and keep them open for good, with all funds going directly to payroll and operating costs.
Following a 3-month closure with zero rent relief, the Black Drop has suffered a devastating 80% revenue loss in the wake of COVID-19, with remaining income further decimated by the smoke from the fires ravaging the West Coast. Meanwhile, the small business loan we’ve been promised may not arrive until 2021, and plumbing costs and a walk-in fridge malfunction in the new space have maxed out our budget.
The decision to ask for support has been humbling, and not one that we’ve taken lightly. Simply put, we need our community to help us get through this.
