Supporting Artisans in Florence

Donation protected
PROTECT, PROMOTE, PRESERVE.

The Artisan Quarter Association is designed to directly support the local artisans of the Oltrarno district of Florence. These are highly skilled artists with specialized talents. Many have worked their entire lives mastering their craft. In some cases, they are among a very small number of individuals that hold vital knowledge of their specialization. This core group of artists has been hit especially badly by COVID and the impact to the Italian economy and tourism downturn.

On a broader scale, the arts and humanities will benefit, as will future generations of artisans who will be enabled through this Foundation to carry on the priceless traditions of their forebears.

We are taking a tiered approach to our fundraising, addressing the most immediate needs first. We have just begun this effort and while we feel confident we can reach our goals, we are also realistic that we are living in unprecedented and uncertain times.

First phase: Protect the artists who are still surviving in the Oltrarno and ensure not another one will be forced to shutter their shop. We will also be working to find any artisans who have already left and will work to reinstate them wherever possible.

Second phase: Promote the arts and livelihood of the artists, and the spirit of the Oltrarno. Our goal is to expand the current site into a dynamic, bespoke hub to feature the Artisans, their skills and creations. The goal is to provide added exposure for all, more channels for them to connect with their clients, and an e-store to facilitate sales and access. In time we plan to enrich the site with an interactive walking map of the Oltrarno, featured courses available with the Artisans, content to engage and educate visitors, and much more.

Third phase: Preserve. We will work with the local Artisans to develop means to bring their craftsmanship and products to a wider audience, preserve and allow these arts to be passed down to future generations by offering extensive Master Classes as well as shorter courses and experiences.

We will need funds to keep the Artisan Quarter site continually operational and updated, and are working to make it self-funding in perpetuity. Once our first priorities are met we will continue our work to promote the artists to help them get exposure and to build awareness.

Funds are needed immediately, this is an ongoing crisis situation that continues to deteriorate.

Myriad people stand to benefit from preserving this historically rich area of Florence. Not only those living and working there today, but future visitors and generations of artisans as well as those who appreciate fine art and craftsmanship.

On behalf of the Artisans and the Artisan Quarter Association, we thank you for any support you can give, either via donation or by helping us spread the word to others who may be able to help. This support is vital to ensure these incredibly talented and dedicated artists can continue in their trades and prosper.
