SAVE THE POTTER COUNTY ARTISAN CENTER

WHO WE ARE

The Potter County Artisan Center was started five years ago as a means to benefit local artists and artisans and provide a place for the community and visitors to purchase unique gifts.  We sell paintings, pottery, jewelry, photographs, fiber arts, herbal goods, soaps, gourds and other handmade items as well as locally made maple syrup, honey, cheese and preserves.  We promote art to the community and host a wide range of classes.

WHAT HAPPENED

We began as a project of the Visitors Association TPA, which merged with the neighboring county's TPA and relocated a couple of years ago.  The local  Chamber of Commerce also had office space in the building so we became a project of theirs.  Now the Chamber of Commerce opted for alternative arrangements and has moved.  Without these two supporting organizations, we cannot pay the full amount of rent and utilities.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Donations will help us meet our monthly expenses.  Our goal is $24,000, which will get us through the next two years, during which time we want to increase our membership, offer more programs and classes and expand our group to include more authors and musicians and also theater and dance groups.

Our rent and utilities cost $825/mo.  We have a $3000 yearly budget for advertising and other costs.  Our average income from commissions last year was about $400/mo.  Other income includes membership and class fees.  We're a far cry from meeting our expenses, but our plan to expand will result in a self-sustaining business.

FUTURE PLANS

We are now actively recruiting new members which will add income as membership fees and more sales.  We plan to reorganize to incorporate other cultural groups under an umbrella organization and apply for non-profit status, enabling us to offer more programs and classes.

We're confident of our future success in becoming self-supporting because Potter County is becoming a popular tourist destination.  Our county is sparsely populated and offers a beautiful environment for outdoor activities and is home to the internationally acclaimed dark skies of Cherry Springs.  Thousands of star-gazers come each year to view the stars in one of the darkest places on the east coast.
