Dear friends,
Sweet Boots is a 5-year-old kitty who in his short young life has already been through a shelter, rescue group, and two homes.
Last Wednesday Boots was admitted to an animal hospital when his human Dad noticed he has not been himself for a couple of days. Within a few hours, the emergency vet determined that Boots was fighting pancreatitis and was not eating due to abdominal pains.
Boots was transferred and stayed at a local VCA Specialty Animal Hospital until this Saturday, 11/4/17 during which time his diagnosis was changed to hepatic lipidosis a condition often known by the laymen’s term as “fatty liver”. This disease occurs when cats go without food for a few days. Untreated, hepatic lipidosis can result in liver failure and death, thus, it must be aggressively treated. Thankfully, the prognosis can be excellent with intravenous (IV) fluids, proper nutritional supplementation, and supportive care, but it can be extremely costly to treat.
Boots' human Dad decided to take him home since he cannot afford the continued hospital stay for his sweet boy. Boots' human Dad is an elementary teacher with a meager income but he is determined to save Boots' life. Thus far the hospital stay including the required medical tests had already reached $2K and the ongoing home treatment as well as follow-up vet checks in the next few weeks will result in another $2K.
Like all of us, pet owners, Boots' human Dad had to face one of the hardest decisions that we sometimes have to make during the life of our furry companion which is to euthanize our pet simply and sadly due to the inability to pay for the neccessary medical treatment. But Boots' human Dad made a (costly) life-saving decision and will not give up on his furry companion.
