Save Shirley Verrett's Music

Donation protected
Update: With the initial success of this campaign, we were able to secure all of Ms. Verrett's personally annotated scores. Once the company running the sale heard of our mission to preserve her legacy, they made a package offer of other items from her collection. Recognizing that there were historic posters, photographs, programs, and other pieces of memorabilia from her career, we took advantage of the offer made by the sellers and purchased those items en masse.

In the coming days, we will continue to share photos as items are catalogued. Please keep spreading the word about what we've accomplished as a community of those who cherish Ms. Verrett's memory. We set out to save 10-12 scores with the initial goal of $500. Thanks to your generosity, we have accomplished that goal and so much more. Thank you for being part of this.

Shirley Verrett was an internationally renowned opera singer and concert recitalist. Her performances and recordings marked her as one the leading singers in the post-Marian Anderson generation of African American classical musicians.

It has come to our attention that parts of Ms. Verrett’s estate will be liquidated beginning on Saturday, July 28, 2018. This includes 56 opera scores from her personal library. These scores represent a part of operatic history and its first strides toward desegregation and equity.

Former students, friends, and colleagues of Professor Verrett are invited to come together to preserve a small portion of her library representing the breadth of her career.

Items purchased with these funds will be shared with the music libraries and institutions where they can be most treasured by future generations of musicians, including those institutions where Ms. Verrett was both a prized student and distinguished professor.

Thank you.
