SAVE SAN FRANCISCO’S MISSION DISTRICT TREES We’re fighting City Hall to prevent the destruction of 47 Ficus trees along 24th Street in the heart of San Francisco’s vibrant Calle 24 Latino Cultural District. We need your support! 24th Street/Calle 24 is lined with mature Ficus trees planted decades ago, creating a green canopy above the thriving thoroughfare that flows through the heart of our Mission District neighborhood. These trees are part of the fabric of our community, and now they’re in danger of being torn away! We need your help to raise the funds necessary to hire an independent, certified Arborist to make a study of the health of the Ficus trees. After years of neglect, the City has decided to cut down an astounding 47 trees along 12 blocks! The City has been inconsistent with the information they’ve provided us: Last year we were told an astounding 77 trees needed to be cut down because they were a public safety hazard. After the community expressed its outrage at this proposal, the City reduced that number to an alarming 47 trees. Just two years before, a City-funded report indicated only 16 trees were at risk of failure and needed to be removed. We need to fund an independent study to find out the truth about the health and safety of these trees. With your help we can hire an independent, Certified Arborist and Qualified Tree Risk Assessor from the Bay Area Arborist Cooperative. Your contribution will fund: 1. Initial Field Report to determine which trees are sustainable of the 47 trees the City wants to cut down. 2. In-depth Risk Assessment to determine the relative risk that individual trees may present, and how to mitigate such risk whenever possible. 3. Recommendations for the pruning and care of all sustainable trees, both short- and long-term. An additional 25 Ficus trees that the City had initially scheduled to be destroyed will be included in this group. Partnering with Calle 24 Latino Cultural District, we’re raising these funds to appeal the City’s tree-removal order, and save as many of these iconic and beautiful trees as possible. All donations are fully tax-deductible, and will be deposited directly into the PayPal account of Calle 24 Latino Cultural District, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization through the PayPal Giving Fund. All Donors will receive a receipt for their tax-deductible donation. Donations that help us exceed our goal of $11,500 will be administered by Calle 24 Latino Cultural District to fund community-based education and maintenance initiatives for the ongoing care of the 24th Street trees. The Ficus trees have stood among us for decades, becoming part our cultural identity. Their destruction in such large numbers will devastate our community. The trees ground us in our neighborhood, providing beauty, fresh air and welcomed shade. People from all over the world visit San Francisco’s Calle 24 Latino Cultural District and marvel at the ribbon of green that binds us all together. We recognize the opinion of some members of our community that Ficus trees are responsible for damaged sidewalks that present safety hazards and difficulty for business owners. We believe years of neglect and poor pruning practices by the City government has caused this problem, and advocate for mitigation of “infrastructure conflicts” as separate from a determination of whether trees will be allowed to live or be cut down. Responsible care and acknowledged best practices to encourage a healthy tree canopy will remove future obstacles. In the meantime, progressive public works policy that recognizes trees and human-made infrastructure are of equal value will enable trees and human activity to coexist. Top 3 Reasons to Save San Francisco’s Mission District Ficus Trees 1. Preserve the natural beauty and environmental benefits provided by the tree canopy. The mature Ficus trees now scheduled for destruction by City Order bring life-enhancing beauty to our neighborhood and city. As a significant part of our tree canopy, their very presence helps to counter the effects of climate change by sequestering carbon and reducing temperatures in their vicinity. 2. Protect the cultural heritage of San Francisco’s Calle 24 Latino Cultural District. The decades-old corridor of Ficus trees along 24th Street helps to define the unique character of the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District, both visually and culturally. These trees are part of the fabric of community life, spanning and binding generations, as markers of memory and identity. They are cultural assets experienced on a personal level, sharing a community kinship like brothers and sisters. 3. Defend environmental justice in a long-disadvantaged, now-gentrifying community of color. For decades the Mission District has been the home of San Francisco’s Latino/Chicano community, often finding itself marginalized by a lack of city services in comparison to other, more affluent neighborhoods. In 2013, a report published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Center for Advanced Urbanism found “…a disproportionate share of pollution has caused the Mission District to suffer the worst health conditions among all San Francisco neighborhoods….” In response to this report, the San Francisco Commission on the Environment unanimously passed a resolution in support of the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District as a “cultural, commercial and environmental justice district in San Francisco.” We ask you to stand with us! Stand with the 24th Street trees! Please contribute a tax-deductible donation to our campaign, and share our link with your friends on social media, by text and email. Thank you! Gracias!
